NBA Trade Rumors: Latest Details on Shabazz Napier, Mike Miller and More

Chris RolingJul 27, 2015

See? Just when folks turn away from the Association's rumor mill to look at baseball and impending NFL training camps, the NBA fires a few shots to recapture attention.

Recapture it has, thanks to new offerings from the rumor mill and deals with widespread impact involving teams striking deals and beyond. While some of the names coming up aren't as big as say, LaMarcus Aldridge from earlier this offseason, they are still notable.

Below, let's take a look at the recent rumblings. There's trades to create space, trades to improve, non-moves to monitor and star players impacted by the deals.

Who says the NBA isn't a year-round sport, too?

Shabazz Napier Trade Details

The globe knew concrete details about two Florida NBA franchises.

On one end, the rebuilding Orlando Magic wanted to reinforce depth behind a budding guard combo of Elfrid Payton and Victor Oladipo. The contending Miami Heat wanted to dump salary in any way possible after years as tax offenders.

Talk about a dream scenario, right? Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported over the weekend the Heat will ship guard Shabazz Napier to the Magic. According to USA Today's Jeff Zillgitt, the other details are:

It's a coup for the Magic if true, as they gain a young guard who averaged 5.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game last year. Napier will develop behind the two starters for next to nothing.

For the Heat, the protected status means it's near-impossible they get anything in return, but dumping Napier's contract seems worth it. Keep in mind the team touts plenty of depth at the point with Goran Dragic, Mario Chalmers and Tyler Johnson on board.

Call it a win-win for both sides.

The 76ers' Trade Discussion

With Joel Embiid out for the season, the Philadelphia 76ers are a team to watch as the front office might consider trade options to help reinforce the depth down low.

The team added Duke's Jahlil Okafor in the draft and still touts Nerlens Noel as another high-upside option, but veteran depth might be a focal point.

Or maybe it was about cap space. Either way, Sports Illustrated's Jake Fischer reported on rumblings about the team's interest in Brendan Haywood:

Everyone knows Haywood by now, the guy with a $10.5 million cap hit next season, per Spotrac. The veteran whom the Cleveland Cavaliers wanted to unload to free itself of a tax burden.

The 76ers were one of the few teams with the cap space to make something happen. However, it sounds like the front office balked at the idea down the home stretch, or wasn't willing to be as cheap as the team that did pull the trigger on a Haywood deal with the Cavaliers.

That brings us to our last offering from the mill.

Mike Miller-Brendan Haywood Aftermath

The Portland Trail Blazers wound up as the team willing to offer the Cavaliers enough for a cap cleanse.

According to Wojnarowski, the Cavaliers shipped Haywood, veteran guard Mike Miller and a pair of draft picks to the Trail Blazers for cash. Cleveland.com's Chris Haynes broke it down further, noting the Cavaliers gain trade exceptions of $10.5 and $2.85 million.

It was a common-sense move for the Trail Blazers, who gain a huge amount of cap space with the deal once they show the new veterans the door. Here is the interesting part—this time around, a guy by the name of LeBron James isn't upset Miller won't be on his team anymore.

ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst reported the rumbling:

Perhaps Miller's wants played a role, too. Ethan J. Skolnick of Bleacher Report noted the guard's desire to work with younger players:

Minutes may also play a factor in Miller's NBA future, as Haynes notes in his write-up. Either way, it's clear the 35-year-old veteran isn't ready to hang up the sneakers just yet, and his future makes for one of the more interesting storylines.

Also clear is the fact James and Co. are all on the same page about what's best for the roster. Dumping two contracts for next to nothing in return makes sense. It took quite a long time, but the Cavaliers figured out how to make it work.

With the King's approval, of course.
