The USMNT Has a Dream Group and Qualification is a Must at the 2026 World Cup

Jon ArnoldDec 5, 2025

It doesn't get much better than that.

A ball won't be kicked for more than six months. Teams that look easy on paper will become the favorites' nightmares. That is the fun of the World Cup. But after Friday's draw in Washington, D.C., U.S. men's national team fans will be able to dream of a straightforward path to progression.

Their group of Australia, Paraguay and the winner of a four-team playoff between Turkey, Romania, Slovakia or Kosovo taking place in March, looks winnable for a team of the United States' caliber - and if anything should only lead fans to expect Mauricio Pochettino's side to top the group and set up a Round of 32 contest against a third-place finisher on July 1 in Northern California.

This was always a possibility. With the expanded World Cup, more teams than ever will take part in the 2026 tournament, opening the possibility that the teams filling the final slots will be below the standard of teams that typically make the sport's biggest showcase.

Paraguay finished sixth in South American qualification, a position that would've put them out of the 2022 tournament. And the European team, be it Turkey, Romania, Slovakia, or Kosovo, will also benefit from 16 UEFA teams getting into the competition. Australia locked up its place in North America in the third round of Asian qualification, a spot that would've seen the Socceroos head to the tournament in the smaller field as well.

Teams with no merits don't make the World Cup, even in an expanded tournament.

Since the poaching of manager Gustavo Alfaro from Costa Rica, Paraguay has defended well, a hallmark of Alfaro's teams. But in a pleasant surprise for fans of Los Guaranies, they have also started getting attacking contributions beyond Miguel Almiron, with Julio Enciso and Matías Galarza finding the back of the net multiple times in 2025.

Australia is also a team that can be staunch at the back, anchored by goalkeeper Matthew Ryan and with experienced defenders forming a stern line of three. But finding the back of the net has been a challenge, as the Australian side tried several combinations during qualification and often struggled in matches when they couldn't create or finish chances.

And the requirement of a European team in each group denied the U.S. the chance to have beloved minnow Cape Verde in its group. The U.S. avoided some of the European teams looming as potential threats; Italy, Denmark, and Ukraine would head elsewhere.

The U.S. can use that to its advantage. While still not a true contender to lift the trophy, the U.S. has proven since the Gold Cup final that it is firmly in the tier below those contenders. Questions remain, but Pochettino has found answers to many of them and has enjoyed seeing players excel in friendly matches, which will make his decisions in picking a squad much more difficult than they seemed when he took the job last year.

Adding evidence to the thought that the U.S. should feel confident heading into the summer, at least about the group stage, are recent friendly matches against the two confirmed opponents. The U.S. topped Paraguay 2-1 in November without many of their top stars.

And in October, it was a win over Australia by the same scoreline, with Haji Wright scoring a double in Colorado.

Recent matches can also offer a bit of caution. Before Pochettino's tactical switch to a three-man back line, Turkey dominated the U.S. 2-1 in a June friendly before the Gold Cup.

That tournament, though, saw the U.S. compete in the continental championship without its biggest star, Christian Pulisic, and with several key players out with injuries.

Pochettino and his staff will be hoping his players don't read columns like this, don't listen to the comments of family and friends. They need their team to go into the group on guard against upsets, adhering to well-worn sports phrases like respecting everyone and fearing no one.

But the fear of being in a Group of Death or facing a nemesis like Morocco or a superstar like Erling Haaland's Norway has dissipated.

The U.S. closed out 2025 playing well and now has been handed a fantastic draw. Going into 2026, it's time to dream.
