Top Contenders to Watch
Argentina
Led by the legendary Lionel Messi, reigning World Cup champion Argentina will look to make it two in a row in 2026.
The 2022 World Cup title marked the first of Messi's illustrious career and Argentina's first since 1986. With a win in 2026, Argentina would become the first nation to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.
While Messi is the star and will be the focus among fans, he will turn 39 during the 2026 World Cup, so contributions from other players will be needed in order for La Albiceleste to repeat.
France
In 2022, France came agonizingly close to winning a second consecutive World Cup, only to fall to Argentina in the final on penalty kicks.
France won the World Cup in 2018, marking their first such title since 1998. Kylian Mbappé, who was just 19 years old at the time, was a big reason why, as he scored four goals and was named the tournament's best young player.
Four years later, Mbappé led the 2022 World Cup with eight goals, winning the Golden Boot. If he turns in a repeat performance in 2026, France will be tough to beat.
Spain
Since winning their first World Cup in 2010, Spain have largely disappointed on the biggest stage in soccer.
They didn't make it out of the group stage in 2014 and were knocked out in the Round of 16 in both 2018 and 2022, but there is reason to believe La Roja are back.
Spain won the UEFA European Championship last year, beating England in the final, which is a big reason why they are the No. 1 team in the world in the FIFA rankings. With talent and skill from top to bottom, Spain may be the most complete team in the 2026 World Cup field.
