Will Mike Norvell Be Fired by FSU? Latest Updates amid 5-6 CFB Season
Despite falling to 5-6 this season with Friday night's 21-11 loss to NC State, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell's job is safe.
ESPN's Andrea Adelson reported on Sunday that Florida State intends to retain Norvell for the 2026 season. Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports added that the university president, athletic director and board "are aligned in support of Norvell, who has pledged to make changes in areas of recruiting and player evaluation to enhance FSU's roster."
"FSU Board of Trustees Chairman Peter Collins, Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford, and I are in complete agreement that changes are needed for our program to improve," FSU president Dr. Richard McCullough said in a statement. "Coach Norvell embraces our support in that process and agrees that success must be achieved. He continues to demonstrate an unwavering belief in this program's future, and so do we. This decision reflects a unified commitment to competing in the rapidly evolving landscape of college football, while maintaining continuity within the program."
Last month, Alford said that a comprehensive review of the football program would be conducted at the end of the season. Norvell has coached the team since 2020 and now has a 38-33 record during his tenure, though the past couple of years have been tough, as this season's struggles come after a 2-10 finish to the 2024 campaign.
Despite the Seminoles' disappointing stretch, Norvell has maintained his confidence that there are brighter days ahead.
"This program has been built on belief, sacrifice, and putting the team first," Norvell said in a statement. "That set of values has always guided my actions, and those of our players. The driving motivation behind this is to make certain that we are doing everything properly to obtain and retain elite players, add critical pieces, and sustain long-term success. I love Florida State, and I am fully committed to this program, and our shared goals."
Florida State will need to win its regular-season finale next Saturday against Florida (3-8) to be bowl-eligible this year, so Norvell will surely be looking to help the team cap things off on a high note.
