Donnie Tyndall, Southern Miss Basketball Face Multiple Violations

Tyler ConwayJul 23, 2015

Former Southern Miss men's basketball coach Donnie Tyndall and the university are expected to receive a notice of allegations this week regarding multiple violations of an NCAA bylaw.

A source told ESPN.com's Andy Katz that Tyndall, who coached at Southern Miss from 2012-14, will be the overwhelming focus of the charges levied. The NCAA infractions committee will allege academic misconduct, impermissible financial aid and "lack of control that falls under the unethical conduct bylaw that involves a coach," per Katz.

On Friday, David Brandt of the Associated Press reported Southern Miss committed multiple violations:

The NCAA says Southern Mississippi's men's basketball program and former coach Donnie Tyndall have committed multiple violations, including arranging fraudulent academic credit, impermissible financial aid and obstructing the governing body's investigation.

The charges were outlined in a notice of allegations released by the university on Friday.

There were seven alleged Level I violations in the NCAA's 43-page notice.

"

News of the allegations first broke in November 2014, centering on financial aid given to players who were ineligible but planning to transfer to Southern Miss. The school self-imposed a postseason ban in January as the investigation drew more national news.

Tennessee, which hired Tyndall as its head coach in 2014, fired him in March, saying it was unaware of the allegations that would eventually be made.

"Donnie anticipates that investigation process is at a point where a notice of allegations is expected at any time, and we're not at liberty to discuss any details of the investigative process," Tyndall's attorney, Stu Brown, told Katz.

This is the second time a Tyndall program has been involved in NCAA impropriety. While at Morehead State, his program was also embroiled in a scandal in which a booster gave improper benefits to a player. Tyndall said last year that he "learned from" the experience.

Tennessee has since hired former Texas coach Rick Barnes to take over its program. If found guilty of the NCAA violations, Tyndall could face a show-cause penalty, meaning his punishments would carry over to whichever program next hires him.
