Former UNC Star Seth Trimble Commits to Louisville in Transfer Portal Ahead of 2026 NBA Season

After a successful four-year stint with North Carolina, Seth Trimble is using his final year of college eligibility to play for a rival ACC school in Louisville.

Trimble told ESPN's Pete Thamel he is committing to the Cardinals through the transfer portal.

It's not a guarantee at this point that Trimble will be eligible for the upcoming season.

A United States District Court judge granted an injunction last month requiring the NCAA to grant athletes from the high school class of 2022 an extra year of eligibility.

NCAA Chief Legal Officer Scott Bearby issued a statement on Tuesday announcing the Division I cabinet does not intend to grant a blanket waiver for a fifth year of eligibility for members of the 2022 recruiting class:

"The Division I Cabinet, including its student-athlete members, carefully considered whether to make the age-based eligibility rule apply retroactively, and decided that doing so would not be in the best interest of all current and future college athletes. We stand behind and will continue to fully defend the membership's decision. The injunction should never have been granted, and we have asked the Tenth Circuit to permanently reverse it."

Assuming Trimble remains eligible, he will be joining a loaded transfer class assembled by Cardinals head coach Pat Kelsey and his staff.

Louisville has the No. 1 transfer portal class in the country, per 247Sports. Seven players have committed to the program, led by former Kansas center Flory Bidunga.

A four-star recruit in the 2022 class, Trimble has appeared in 126 games with North Carolina over the past four seasons. He started all 24 games he played in 2025-26, averaging a career-high 14.0 points and 3.8 assists.

Kelsey is entering his third season as Louisville head coach. He has a 51-19 record and two NCAA tournament appearances in his first two years. The Cardinals lost in the second round to Michigan State last season.
