WWE SummerSlam 2015: Full Card Predictions After Battleground

Ryan DilbertJul 21, 2015

As enticing as some of the action was at Battleground, the event was clearly a means to set up what will unfold at WWE SummerSlam 2015.

The most obvious example of that was The Undertaker's tearing his way into the WWE title match to strike back against Brock Lesnar. That halted the possibility of the Battleground main event's coming to a satisfying conclusion and instead offered a glimpse of what was to come at SummerSlam.

Lesnar vs. Undertaker is already official for that Aug. 23 pay-per-view, as seen on WWE.com.

What else can fans expect for the big event in Brooklyn, New York? Battleground and Monday's Raw gave out some major hints.

Bray Wyatt's renewed partnership points to a major tag team match. Ryback's injury, John Cena's target on Monday's Raw and the recent spotlight on the women who just arrived from NXT provide tipoffs for what the SummerSlam card will look like.

The Wyatt Family vs. Sting, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns

1 of 6

The Shield and The Wyatt Family will go to war once again. Sort of.

At Battleground, Luke Harper ambushed Roman Reigns to help his old stablemate. Bray Wyatt wasted little time in announcing that "the family has returned." Wyatt and Harper then teamed up, looking to wipe out Reigns on Monday's Raw.

Dean Ambrose was there to even the odds, making fans flash back to the days when The Shield took on The Wyatt Family.

That goes along with recent rumors about a six-man tag match featuring those four men and with a TNA Hall of Famer. According to Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Wrestling Inc) Sting is expected to be involved in the Wyatt-Reigns feud.

It makes sense to put him in a tag match to mask his age and physical limitations while still milking his star power. This Shield 2.0 would face a Wyatt Family needing its own alteration.

Erick Rowan is still out with a biceps injury. Wyatt's character, though, is that of a cult leader. He should theoretically be able to recruit a new member to take on Sting and Company.

Team Bella vs. Team BAD vs. Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Paige

2 of 6

WWE is building toward something big with its women's division. That appears to be a three-way battle between trios.

When Sasha Banks, Charlotte and Becky Lynch emerged on last week's Raw, they each quickly aligned themselves with a group. One member of each of those chose a representative to fight at Battleground. WWE has since retained its focus on that storyline, having the women collide in different forms on Monday's Raw.

The fact that WWE allotted space on Monday's Raw for two matches to further this story suggests that it's leading to something more high-profile than we're used to seeing from the Divas.

A battle between the newly formed Team BAD, Paige's crew and the Bellas would build on this idea of a revolution within the division. It would showcase a litany of women, including the buzz-creating newcomers from NXT.

The Prime Time Players vs. The New Day (Tag Team Championship)

3 of 6

The feud over the tag titles isn't over. Never mind that WWE has put little effort into generating animosity between The Prime Time Players and The New Day; all signs point to a third-straight pay-per-view bout between those squads.

At Battleground, The Prime Time Players retained in decisive fashion. WWE, though, quickly made it clear that Xavier Woods and Company aren't done hunting gold.

On Monday's Raw, The New Day distracted the tag team champs, leading to Los Matadores' cheap win.

Expect Titus O'Neil and Darren Young to respond and for this narrative to keep rolling right into SummerSlam. WWE has few alternatives to pit against the titleholders. With Jey Uso, Tyson Kidd and Erick Rowan all on the shelf, the tag team division is lacking in depth.

The Miz vs. Ryback vs. Big Show (Intercontinental Championship)

4 of 6

A staph infection forced fans to wait for this matchup. WWE pulled Ryback out of action for Battleground after he suffered the injury days before the event.

With five weeks left until SummerSlam, Ryback has a good amount of time to heal.

And it's clear WWE still wants to have this three-way battle. Big Show halted a speech from The Miz with a mighty right hand. The big man then collided with The Miz on Monday's Raw, flattening him on the mat.

Big Show announced that he's still coming for the Intercontinental Championship. He may end up pushing The Miz aside before getting his crack at the title, but the amount of focus on this story, despite Ryback's injury, suggests that WWE wants to pick up from where it had to press "pause."

Rusev vs. Dolph Ziggler

5 of 6

Dolph Ziggler is coming for revenge. It may be overshadowed by catfighting and a love triangle, but The Showoff's quest to dish out payback is sure to be a key part of SummerSlam.

For one, WWE has constantly kept the spotlight on the tension between Summer Rae and Lana and has given Rusev's jealousy plenty of attention.

And after Rusev's brutal attack left Ziggler with a (storyline) injured trachea, the logical route is for Ziggler to make a triumphant return. SummerSlam is a smart place to host the climax of this story. The bout also provides SummerSlam with a narrative far less dark than what's sure to unfold between Brock Lesnar and Undertaker or The Wyatt Family and Roman Reigns.

Ziggler vs. Rusev, with all of its soap-opera trappings, offers an alternative that will feel right at home at the summer blockbuster.

Seth Rollins vs. John Cena (WWE World Heavyweight Championship)

6 of 6

Consider this the dark-horse option for the card. WWE doesn't often do champion-versus-champion on an event of this scale, but there's reason to believe things will work out that way this time.

For one, Seth Rollins and John Cena look to be done with their most recent rivals.

Rollins escaped Brock Lesnar's wrath thanks to Undertaker. The WWE champ doesn't have to worry about The Beast Incarnate for now, with the latter focused on another foe. As for Cena, he defeated Kevin Owens at Battleground, going 2-1 in their series.

Owens' tapout leaves one feeling that their rivalry is done for the moment.

WWE then offered a hint of what's next for both champs on Monday's Raw. Cena interrupted Rollins' rant and admonished him for being a coward. Cena talked about how he brought excellence to his own title, while Rollins was making a mockery of his belt.

That could easily lead to Rollins' looking to prove himself. That way, Cena would get a major match at SummerSlam, and Rollins would take on a marquee opponent.

His potential challengers beyond Cena are limited. Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose will likely be locked up in an ongoing battle with Bray Wyatt. Cesaro isn't being treated like a top-tier talent. And if Randy Orton gets on the card, it's more probable that it will be thanks to another battle with Sheamus.
