WWE Battleground 2015: Biggest Missed Opportunities with Show's Booking

Aaron BowerJul 20, 2015

As a show that didn't exactly tick all the boxes required to be classed as a top show, Battleground certainly left fans feeling there could have been some things done differently.

There are always missed opportunities on any pay-per-view, and Battleground was no different. With SummerSlam fast approaching and a card needing to take shape quickly to set up momentum, there definitely could have been some changes.

Here are a few of the biggest missed opportunities WWE failed to take advantage of at Battleground.

Debuting Becky Lynch

It was great to see both Charlotte and Sasha Banks compete at Battleground, but it would have been better if Becky Lynch could have been thrown into the mix too.

Sure, she's on the same team as Charlotte, but Lynch and Charlotte have had some sensational bouts in the past, justifying why Lynch is so highly regarded.

That's not to say she would have fought Charlotte, but she could have been on her team in a tag scenario, perhaps.

You could have had six Divas in action as opposed to three, and it would have enabled those who've not seen Lynch yet to see why she's considered a future champion.

Of course, the other side of that is that they can hold Lynch back for another bout of fresh impetus for the Divas division. But with the division riding on the crest of a wave at the moment, this could have been the time to throw Lynch in.

Maintaining Cesaro's Momentum

With Ryback's Intercontinental Championship defense off the card at Battleground, there was scope to throw a few stars who didn't have plans into the card on the night.

And whilst we did get an impromptu Divas match, we still could have had a little more.

Cesaro, for example, has been on a great run recently and is starting to seriously find some momentum on his quest to push his way up the card. Stellar matches against the likes of John Cena, Kevin Owens and Rusev have reminded WWE fans just what a talent Cesaro is.

Yet, he was nowhere to be seen at Battleground. You could have easily put him in a short squash match against someone like Bo Dallas to continue the strong run he's on, and it would have really served a purpose.

Hopefully WWE will strike while the iron is still hot on Raw and give him yet another opportunity to shine because Cesaro is on a roll right now.

Have Owens Pass Out, Not Tap Out

The biggest question mark of the entire night at Battleground almost certainly revolves around the decision to hand John Cena the win over Kevin Owens.

Many expected Owens to get the third meeting between these two men, but instead it was Cena who edged another marathon match.

And it wasn't the fact that he won that caused the biggest upset; it was the way he won.

A controversial win for Cena or even putting Owens away from that huge AA from the top rope would have softened the blow a little more than this.

In making Owens tap out, his position was weakened, and he looks a little more exposed heading toward SummerSlam.

If there is going to be a fourth meeting between these men at SummerSlam, the better option would have been to have Owens pass out, rather than tap out. It would have made his position look slightly stronger, and he could have insisted he never actually submitted.

It would have set up yet another bout far better than this particular outcome.
