Bill Belichick Explains Decision to Go for 2 in UNC's OT Loss to No. 16 UVA
Bill Belichick discussed North Carolina's decision to attempt a two-point conversion in overtime of the team's 17-16 loss to No. 16 Virginia on Saturday.
"Just trying to win the game," Belichick said after the defeat, per ESPN's David Hale.
After the Tar Heels were tied 10-10 with Virginia once the fourth quarter came to a close, the Cavaliers scored a touchdown and kicked an extra point to open overtime. North Carolina answered with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Gio Lopez to Davion Gause before Belichick chose to keep his offense out on the field instead of playing for double overtime.
Lopez rolled out and found Ben Hall on the ensuing two-point conversion, but Hall was tackled just short of the end zone to seal the final result.
Virginia head coach Tony Elliott revealed that he was surprised by Belichick's decision to go for two.
"I would've kicked it. ... But hey, he's won a lot of football games," Elliott said, according to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). "He's one of the best in the business for a reason. Obviously he felt good about the call."
While the defeat marked the Tar Heels' fourth straight loss and dropped them to 2-5 on the season, it was a relatively encouraging performance against a Cavaliers squad that sits at No. 2 in the ACC standings.
North Carolina has also lost its past two games by just four combined points after getting outscored 72-19 across its first two defeats of the losing streak.
