Matt Forte and Jay Cutler = Magic

Kyle BuntonSep 11, 2009

Alright, so I have been hearing around the league and especially in fantasy football, that Matt Forte of the Chicago Bears will have a decrease in performance because of the acquisition of QB Jay Cutler. I believe differently and here are the reasons:

       1. Weak Wide Receiver group- When your number one wide receiver is a return-specialist, there is a problem. Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, and Co. are not the greatest wide receivers, especially when you compare them to what Cutler had in Denver: Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal. When Cutler can't go deep with the wide receivers, he has to check down to somebody.

2.Greg Olsen- This is the year he gets to be considered an elite tight end in the league, along with Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, and Jason Witten. Everybody is saying he will be Cutler's favorite target, and he certainly might be; but the Bears like to put Olsen on the outside as a wide receiver, leaving check down duty to either Desmond Clark or Matt Forte. I believe Cutler will look more for Forte than Clark.

       3. Cutler Didn't Have a Running Back- When he was back in Denver, Jay Cutler never had a running back like Forte. At one point last year, Peyton Hillis was the starting running back even though he was a full back. Forte is strong, fast enough to get to the second level of a defense, and is probably one of the best receiving running backs in the NFL.

       4. The Screen Pass- When executed correctly at the right time, it can be the most devastating play in football. The Bears haven't had a screen pass that was successful for a good amount of time now. The combination of mediocre quarterbacks and the lack of a solid running back who can catch and run, hasn't made it possible to throw the screen. Now that the Bears have a good, possibly great quarterback, and an excellent running back who can do everything, the Bears can incorporate the screen pass into their repertoire.

Matt Forte will be either the same, if not better than last year even with Jay Cutler under center. Cutler will provide running lanes, by opening up the pass, and Forte will take advantage. And remember this, the Bears have always been a run first team, with Cutler they will throw more, but this is still a running football team.
