SEC Football Is Overrated
SEC football is overrated. There. I said it. And deep down in places you don't often visit or tell your drinking buddies about, you know it's true. And let's be clear, the ACC and Big 10 are patently bad, not to mention the un-mentionable Big East. But none of them are overrated; they're just plain bad.
Yes, I know about Florida's national titles and Alabama's resurgence. But the entire SEC lives in a bubble, protected by CBS, the BCS and Mike Slive, all who will continue to pointificate the conference's dominance, rabid fan base and unique matchups and traditions. But when you peel back the onion, it kind of makes you cry.
The SEC 'powerhouse' teams, which could be considered Alabama, Florida, LSU and Ole Miss play the following non-conference teams this year:
- Florida International (twice), Tennessee-Chattanooga, Troy, Charleston Southern, North Texas, Southeastern Louisiana, Northern Arizona, Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane and Louisiana Tech
They also 'get' to play these dogs in conference:
- Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Auburn, Arkansas and Tennessee (sorry Vol fans, you've got a way to go)
Need more evidence, even just after week 1?
- LSU barely escaped against a Washington team that went winless last year and has a first-year coach in Steve Sarkisian, 31-23
- Georgia went into Stillwater, OK and got worked over by the Cowboys 10-24
- Memphis was in the game against Ole Miss until deep into the 3rd quarter...Memphis!
Florida plays Florida State not because they want to, but because the Florida state legislature made it mandatory for FSU, Florida and Miami to play each other in alternating years.
I'm not a homer for any one conference, per say, but we can only hope that voters will one day wake up and do a little homework before giving the SEC so much love year after year. This season the Pac 10 and Big 12 are clearly ahead of the over-hyped SEC.
