College Football Playoff Announces Saints' Superdome as 2028 National Title Game Host
All roads for the 2027 college football season will lead to The Big Easy.
The College Football Playoff announced Wednesday that Caesars Superdome in New Orleans will host the 2028 title game.
"The College Football Playoff is thrilled to bring the national championship game back to New Orleans in 2028," CFP executive director Rich Clark said. "Few cities embrace college football quite like New Orleans, with its unmatched hospitality, culture and passion for the game. We know fans, teams and the entire college football community will have an unforgettable experience in one of the sport's most iconic destinations."
The Superdome last staged the CFP championship in January 2020. LSU capped off a historically dominant season by coasting past Clemson 42-25. Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow threw for 463 yards and five touchdowns.
Thanks to its New Year's Six status under the old format, the Sugar Bowl has been a playoff mainstay. It held a CFP semifinal contest during the 2014, 2017, 2020 and 2023 seasons.
With the expansion to 12 playoff teams, the Sugar Bowl became one of six bowls to comprise the postseason, ensuring a quarterfinal or semifinal battle at the very least will come through New Orleans.
Tony McAuley of NOLA.com noted how having the CFP championship carries more than just prestige. Los Angeles and Houston were projected to have generated an economic impact of $225 million and $330 million respectively by hosting the title game the last two years.
Regardless of who's matched up on the field, the 2028 title clash will draw plenty of tourism to New Orleans.
