With the failure at the U.S. Open no doubt fresh in Johnson's mind, he maintained focus and played an excellent round of golf on Thursday. Here's a look at his eagle putt on the fifth hole, per The Open on Twitter:
Johnson's magnificent driving is a big reason he's playing so well, and American phenom Jordan Spieth knows it. Per this quote from Golf.com on Twitter, Johnson's driving will push the Masters and U.S. Open champion to be at his best:

Golf Digest on Twitter has Johnson's hulk-like swing in slow motion:
Per Mike O'Malley of Golf Digest, here's a look at Johnson's driving stats through the first round. They're pretty impressive.
As good as he's played, there's still five guys within a shot of Johnson. Perhaps chief among them is Australian Jason Day. The 27-year-old is still in search of his first major championship, though he's had some disappointing near misses over the last few years.
Per Golfweek Magazine, Day isn't allowing his bout with vertigo at the PGA Championships to bother him:
Day is too good of a player not to break through at some point. What a story it would be if he made it happen at The Open Championship after falling ill at the U.S. Open. It would be hard not to root for him if he's in the hunt on the weekend.
Let's not forget about Spieth. He's just two shots back at five-under par. The 21-year-old was rolling along after five birdies and no bogeys on the front nine. However, the back nine brought some pitfalls.
He sandwiched bogeys at 13 and 15 between birdies on 11 and 18 to finish even par on the back nine. Even though Johnson is in the lead, you best believe everyone in the field has an eye on Spieth.
This is shaping up to be a potentially compelling final three rounds of golf. Stay tuned.
