Florida's Brendan Bett Ejected After Spitting on USF's Cole Skinner on Video
Florida defensive lineman Brendan Bett was ejected from the final drive of Saturday's loss to South Florida for spitting on USF offensive lineman Cole Skinner, On3's Brett McMurphy reported.
Bett was assessed a 15-yard penalty on the play, which gave USF a first down. South Florida went on to clinch a 18-16 upset of Florida with a walk-off field goal.
Multiple high-profile incidents involving professional players being penalized for spitting took place in the week leading up to Saturday's game.
Inter Miami forward Luis Suárez received a six-game Leagues Cup suspension after apparently spitting toward a Seattle Sounders staffer after last Sunday's Leagues Cup final.
Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was then ejected from a Thursday NFL game for seemingly spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
Bett joined Florida as a transfer from Baylor this summer and has since climbed the depth chart on a defensive line currently missing star Caleb Banks to injury. He recorded three tackles, including one for loss, in the Gators' season-opening win over LIU.
Florida had paid $500,000 USF to play in Gainesville on Saturday, Kevin Brockway previously reported for the Gainesville Sun.
Saturday's loss to an unranked opponent could now impact Florida's playoff hopes, especially given the program's strength of schedule going forward.
The Gators are in line for three straight games against top-10 opponents over the next three weeks, with No. 3 LSU, No. 5 Miami and No. 7 Texas next on the schedule.
Other ranked teams on Florida's upcoming slate of games include No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 4 Georgia, No. 20 Ole Miss, No. 22 Tennessee and No. 14 Florida State.
The Gators, ranked No. 13 heading into the game, will likely take a hit in next week's AP poll before facing LSU next Saturday.
