WWE Battleground 2015: Updated Predictions for Each Match on the Card
Sunday, July 19 is the 2015 edition of WWE’s Battleground pay-per-view, and wrestling fans are genuinely excited about several matches already booked for the special event.
From Brock Lesnar finally getting his hands on WWE world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins to John Cena defending his United States Championship against Kevin Owens, there are several marquee matches highlighting this card.
Add in exciting bouts like Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt and The New Day’s attempt to regain the tag team titles from the Prime Time Players, and there is something for every wrestling fan at this PPV.
Here are the match-by-match predictions for WWE Battleground 2015.
King Barrett Defeats R-Truth
1 of 6
In arguably my least favorite feud of the last several years, King Barrett is set to take on R-Truth on the Battleground pre-show with the right to be called King on the line.
Barrett is one of the most physically gifted athletes on the WWE roster and has the look and attitude to be a top star. Instead of giving him an interesting storyline and building on the momentum of winning the King of the Ring tournament, WWE has allowed him to wallow.
R-Truth is very talented as well but has been treated like a jobber for years. Barrett needs the win far more, and the hope from the vast majority of the WWE Universe is that this will be the last chapter of this terrible program.
Sheamus Defeats Randy Orton
2 of 6
In the ring, Sheamus and Randy Orton are two of the most skilled performers in WWE, but wrestling fans are so tired of seeing these two competitors go head-to-head. At Battleground, they will have yet another singles match.
Leading into this bout, the returning Orton has looked strong, hitting Sheamus with the RKO out of nowhere on several occasions. Sheamus has also been taking clean pinfalls in tag team matches and needs a big win to look strong.
WWE typically books the Money in the Bank briefcase holder weakly before the cash-in attempt, but Sheamus needs a big win right now to make him even look like a worthy championship contender in the future.
The New Day Defeats the Prime Time Players
3 of 6
The Prime Time Players haven’t been terrible as tag team champions, but there is no question that the most entertaining tag team healthy right now is the trio of Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods.
The New Day has everything fans want. From Big E and Kingston stealing the show with their athleticism and strength in the ring to Woods on the outside of the ring acting as the group’s mouthpiece, the trio has been one of the highlights of WWE programming each week.
While I typically hate the title changing hands so often, The New Day deserves to be champions right now as the top heels. Let the Prime Time Players, Lucha Dragons and other top teams chase the belts as faces.
Bray Wyatt Defeats Roman Reigns
4 of 6
Bray Wyatt has gotten the upper hand for the most part in this feud, but it was Roman Reigns who looked strong during the go-home episode of Raw. Typical wrestling booking suggests Wyatt will pick up the victory at Battleground.
Wyatt's stealing the win in dirty fashion on Sunday would naturally lead to a rematch at SummerSlam, and Reigns could pick up the victory he needs at the WWE's second-largest PPV to continue trying to get over with the WWE Universe.
On the other hand, taking a loss Sunday would further eliminate anyone’s complaints that Reigns never loses, and a defeat could help him in the long run by building legitimate sympathy for his character.
Wyatt should walk out of Battleground victorious, but this likely won’t be the end of the feud.
Kevin Owens Defeats John Cena
5 of 6The first two matches between Kevin Owens and John Cena have been Match of the Year candidates, and there is little doubt that the third contest will be just as fun to watch.
The biggest X-factor at Battleground will be whether Cesaro or Rusev interferes with the match.
Both Cesaro and Rusev have gripes with Owens over the way he interfered with their title matches, and it’s hard to imagine that neither will try to get involved with the bout.
The hope is, though, that the interference accidentally costs Cena the victory and the United States Championship. With Rusev likely battling Dolph Ziggler when he returns, Cesaro could be the man who hits the ring as Owens is about to earn the win and takes out Cena by accident.
The resulting Triple Threat match at SummerSlam between Owens, Cena and Cesaro for the U.S. title would be absolute gold.
Brock Lesnar Defeats Seth Rollins
6 of 6The main event of Battleground will feature Brock Lesnar attempting to get the WWE World Heavyweight Championship back from Seth Rollins, but there are few wrestling fans who believe it's going to be that easy.
Lesnar has methodically made his way through Rollins’ entire support system—destroying J&J Security and injuring Kane on Monday’s Raw—but the champion is a protege of Triple H and will have something else up his sleeve for Battleground.
According to reddit user FalconArrow—a contributor who has provided several credible rumors—there are huge plans for a swerve in the main event. If Lesnar isn't going to win the world title at Battleground or SummerSlam, WWE Creative must come up with something believable enough to divert the Beast’s attention.
There have been suggestions of Triple H's turning on Rollins or even a possible reformation of The Shield, but one intriguing concept has Undertaker coming back to get his revenge on Lesnar for ending The Streak at WrestleMania 30.
Something big is going to happen in this main event match, but it likely won’t be a title change. Lesnar will be victorious in the bout via disqualification, but Rollins will walk out of Battleground with the belt thanks to outside interference.
