Rory McIlroy Explains Why Being a Ryder Cup Playing Captain Isn't Sustainable in Video

Mike ChiariAug 13, 2025

Ahead of the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York, next month, Rory McIlroy expressed his belief that it isn't possible to be a successful playing captain in a Ryder Cup.

While speaking to reporters (h/t ESPN's Mark Schlabach), McIlroy divulged that he has already turned down an offer to be a playing captain in the future and explained why he feels it is so difficult to thrive in a dual role.

"You think about the extra media that a captain has to do, you think about the extra meetings that the captains have to do with the vice captains, with the PGA of America. In Keegan [Bradley's] case, preparing your speech for the opening ceremony. There's a lot of things that people don't see that the captain does [during] the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big.

"If you'd have said it 20 years ago, I'd say, 'Yeah, it was probably possible to do,' but how big of a spectacle and everything that's on the line in a Ryder Cup now, I just think it would be a very difficult position to be in."

McIlroy's comments come amid the possibility of Keegan Bradley being a playing captain to Team USA against Team Europe this year, as Bradley is currently 10th in the Ryder Cup standings among Americans.

Only the top six players in the standings will qualify automatically for Team USA, but Bradley could use one of his six captain's picks on himself.

Per Schlabach, Bradley previously said he would choose himself if "I feel like I'm going to help the team," and McIlroy suggested Wednesday that Bradley deserves to be part of the Ryder Cup as a player, saying, "I definitely think he's one of the best 12 American players right now. That's why everyone is so interested and it's such a compelling case. I'm just as interested as everyone else to see how it all plays out."

If Bradley does end up picking himself for the team, the 2011 PGA Championship winner will be the first Ryder Cup playing captain in more than 60 years, as Arnold Palmer was the last in 1963.

As for McIlroy, he is already locked into a Ryder Cup spot for Team Europe, as he is the No. 2-ranked player in the world behind only American Scottie Scheffler.

The 36-year-old McIlroy completed the career Grand Slam this year by winning his first Masters and his first major title of any kind since the 2014 PGA Championship.

While Bradley has not won a major in 14 years, he did win the Travelers Championship in June, and he has recorded five top-10 finishes on the year.

Entering this week's BMW Championship, which is the final tournament before the six automatic qualifiers for each Ryder Cup team are determined, the trio of Scheffler, J.J. Spaun and Xander Schauffele is already locked in for Team USA.

Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau and Harris English occupy the next three spots with Justin Thomas lurking close behind in seventh.

For Team Europe, McIlroy, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood have clinched, and Robert MacIntyre, Tyrrell Hatton and Sepp Straka are currently ranked fourth through sixth.
