MLB All-Star Game 2015: Results and Key Highlights from 3rd Straight AL Victory

Steve SilvermanJul 15, 2015

It didn't take long for Mike Trout to put his imprint all over the All-Star Game.

The Los Angeles Angels star led off with a home run and later scored the go-ahead run as he led the American League to a 6-3 victory over the National League in the 86th Midsummer Classic at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

The American League has won three All-Star Games in a row and has reeled off a 15-3-1 streak in the series. The win gives the AL representative home-field advantage in the World Series.

Trout stepped into the batter's box against Los Angeles Dodgers ace Zack Greinke and drove a 94 mph fastball over the outside corner to right field. The line drive made it over the top of the wall to give the American League a 1-0 lead.

Greinke quickly settled down, though, and struck out four American League hitters over the next two innings.

Jhonny Peralta tied the game for the National League in the bottom of the second on a bloop single to right field that scored Paul Goldschmidt. However, the AL would retake the lead a few innings later—a lead that it would not relinquish.

After Alcides Escobar led off the top of the fifth with a single off Clayton Kershaw, Trout appeared to hit a tailor-made double-play ball to second baseman D.J. LeMahieu. But he sprinted to the base and beat Peralta's relay to first.

An Albert Pujols walk pushed him to second, and he eventually scored on a Prince Fielder single to left field. Joc Pederson of the Dodgers fielded the hit cleanly and made a strong throw home, but the speedy Trout scored easily.

Trout won his second consecutive MVP award as a result, becoming the first player in All-Star history to win that honor in back-to-back games.

"It's obviously a humbling honor with the MVPs," he said after the game, per Ronald Blum of the Associated Press (h/t CBS Sports).

American League manager Ned Yost was thrilled that his side came up with the victory and was impressed with Trout's all-around performance.

"He can do anything that anybody can do on a baseball field," Yost said, per Blum. "He can hit with power. He can run. He can drive the gap. He's a great defender. He's just special. When you look at Mike, you don't look at a 23-year-old. You look at a guy that is one of the best baseball players on this planet."

The AL added to the lead when Lorenzo Cain drove Pujols home with a double.

The NL climbed back into the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Andrew McCutchen hit a long home run to left field off the Tampa Bay Rays' Chris Archer, but the American League responded in the next inning with RBI by Manny Machado and Fielder.

In addition to McCutchen's home run, the National League had a couple of notable moments. New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom was electric, as he sat down the American Leaguers in order in the sixth inning and struck out all three of the batters he faced.

Hometown pitcher Aroldis Chapman of the Cincinnati Reds closed the show with a similar performance in the ninth, using his blazing fastball to strike out the side and overpower the American League.

Minnesota Twins second baseman Brian Dozier, a late addition to the American League team, added a home run to center field in his first All-Star appearance.

David Price of the Detroit Tigers was credited with the victory for the American League, while Kershaw was tagged with the loss.
