Prime Time Players vs. New Day: Winner and Reaction from 2015 WWE Battleground

One month after defeating New Day to become WWE Tag Team champions for the first time, The Prime Time Players successfully retained their titles Sunday night at Battleground.

Titus O'Neil and Darren Young somewhat unexpectedly won the belts at Money in the Bank, and they proved at Battleground that they aren't a flash in the pan by overcoming the numbers advantage created by Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods.

The Prime Time Players got the upper hand on New Day more often than not during the build toward Battleground, as they beat them on several occasions in singles bouts and bigger tag matches involving other Superstars.

That likely led many to believe New Day might recapture the Tag Team Championships since WWE tends to even things out, but that ultimately wasn't the case, as The Prime Time Players continued their run with the straps.

Both The PTP and New Day are entertaining teams, but there is some concern with regard to WWE's tag team division as a whole on the heels of Sunday's result. Aside from the two teams that competed at Battleground, there isn't much depth present.

While The Prime Time Players and New Day could continue their feud, it doesn't seem likely since the rematch clause is now out of the way. If they don't face each other at SummerSlam and beyond, though, another duo will have to step up.

The options are limited to the likes of The Lucha Dragons, The Ascension and Los Matadores. Either the team of Luke Harper and Erick Rowan or The Usos would be more intriguing possibilities, but they both currently have a member nursing an injury, so that must be put on hold.

WWE also has the option of calling a team up from NXT, but the only one ready for that at this point is the pairing of Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady. Since The Prime Time Players are a face team too, though, the WWE Creative team would be hard-pressed to make that work.

The tag team division seems to be cyclical in WWE as it ebbs and flows from month to month. It's fair to say it is currently in a downturn, but that could very well change in the near future as guys return from injuries.

Despite the obvious issues with tag team wrestling in WWE, however, The Prime Time Players and New Day put on a solid match at Battleground, and they proved capable of leading a division that needs a clear direction.
