Both Okada and Strickland entered Forbidden Door coming off massive wins at All In, albeit in matches that had significantly different stakes.
Okada and Kenny Omega did battle in a bout to unify the Continental and International Championships, renewing their epic rivalry from their time together in New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
The Rainmaker prevailed in yet another memorable match, making him the first unified champion in AEW history.
Meanwhile Strickland joined forces with Will Ospreay in a feud with The Young Bucks, and they aimed to knock the arrogant brothers down a peg or two.
In their match at All In, The Young Bucks put their status as executive vice presidents of AEW on the line, while Swerve and Ospreay agreed that neither could challenge for the AEW world title for a year in the event of a loss.
Swerve and Ospreay came out on top, meaning Nick and Matt Jackson are no longer EVPs of AEW.
Coming out of All In, Strickland began to have a problem with Okada due to his friendship and association with The Bucks.
Last month on an episode of Dynamite, Swerve saved The Outrunners from an attack at the hands of Okada and The Young Bucks, prompting Okada to challenge Strickland to a title match at Forbidden Door.
The challenge was quickly accepted and the match was made official, pitting two of AEW's biggest stars against each other.
While Swerve is a former AEW world champion and one of the most popular figures in the company, Okada continued his recent dominance, adding a win over Strickland to his résumé.
