Bryson DeChambeau Talks Pace of Play, Says 'People Are Too Scared to Be Exposed'

Adam WellsJul 19, 2025

Amid concerns about the pace of play through the first two rounds of The Open Championship, Bryson DeChambeau would welcome the addition of a time clock in tournaments to speed up rounds.

Speaking to reporters after his third round on Saturday, DeChambeau called the pace-of-play questions a "simple solution" by adding a timing element, but "people are too scared to be exposed" if their specific timing is disrupted.

The question came up in part because DeChambeau was being timed by a rules official on the 17th hole in his third round. He put some of the blame for his timing issues on the pairing of Thomas Detry and Jacob Skov Olesen directly in front of him:

"Understand we were struggling with pace the whole day. I was moving my butt as fast as I could. Greens were really tricky. I was trying to read them right. We just kept losing time. Unfortunately on the 16-17 exchange, you've got a downhill drivable hole you can play pretty quick if you get in the right spot. They did that, and we just lost more time to the group in front of us, and they put us on the clock, which is unfortunate."

DeChambeau has been criticized at times in his career for playing at a slow pace. It got to a point that the PGA Tour said in August 2019 it was reviewing the pace-of-play policy due to the complaints about his game.

The PGA Tour announced a revised pace-of-play policy in March with players given 40 seconds to play a stroke, with an additional 10 seconds allowed under certain circumstances.

DeChambeau is not subject to those rules in most events he plays since his a member of LIV Golf, but the PGA Tour maintains a relationship with the four major tournaments. The PGA of America is a separate body that runs the PGA Championship.

In June, the PGA Tour revealed the median round time for Tour events this year is down five minutes to four hours, 46 minutes compared to the same period in 2024.

There were several reasons cited for the improved pace, including smaller fields, group sizes, enhanced technology, weather conditions and player awareness.

Despite some pushback about the pace of his round, DeChambeau continued his strong player after a rough start on Thursday. He finished with a 68 on Saturday, bringing his 54-hole score to two-under par.
