British Open Leaderboard 2025 Review of Top Scorecards and Player Stats on Day 2

Joe TanseyJul 18, 2025

Scottie Scheffler took control of the 2025 Open Championship with a seven-under 64 on Friday.

Scheffler owns a one-shot lead over Matt Fitzpatrick and a two-shot edge over Brian Harman and Haotong Li.

The top four players on the leaderboard created some separation between themselves and the rest of the field at Royal Portrush. The next five golfers on the leaderboard sit three shots behind Harman and Li.

Scheffler, Fitzpatrick and Harman turned in three of the best eight rounds on Friday.

The most notable non-leader round came from Bryson DeChambeau, who rescued himself from missing the cut with a six-under 65.

Scottie Scheffler's 64 Powers Him Into Lead

2 of 4
The 153rd Open - Day Two

Scottie Scheffler was the story of Friday's second round at Royal Portrush.

The No. 1 golfer in the round produced the lowest score of the tournament so far with a seven-under 64. He was inches shy of an eight-under 63, but he missed his birdie putt on the 18th.

Scheffler carded four birdies on each side of the course. His only blemish was a bogey on the par-four 11th.

After the bogey, Scheffler carded four pars and three birdies to leapfrog Fitzpatrick and become the only player at a double-digit mark under par through 36 holes.

Scheffler barely displayed any flaws on Friday, and if that version of him shows up this weekend, he has the potential to run away with the Claret Jug.

Matt Fitzpatrick, Brian Harman Get Into Position to Challenge for Second Major Titles

3 of 4
The 153rd Open - Day Two

Matt Fitzpatrick and Brian Harman are the biggest challengers to Scheffler going into Saturday's third round.

Fitzpatrick used a stretch of four birdies in a row to start the back nine to surge further up the leaderboard. He was the solo leader until Scheffler birdies two of his last three holes.

Fitzpatrick recorded eight birdies in total, but he also had three bogeys to keep him down to nine-under.

Harman produced a much cleaner scorecard with six birdies and 12 pars. The consistent approach around Portrush was similar to style of play Harman showcased when he won The Open at Royal Liverpool in 2023.

Fitzpatrick and Harman each have major titles to their names, so they shouldn't feel a ton of nerves while chasing Scheffler.

Re-taking the lead from the top player in the world will be tough, but both players have the game to go low and match what Scheffler puts out over the next two rounds.

Bryson DeChambeau Surges Back to Cut Line

4 of 4
The 153rd Open - Day Two

Bryson DeChambeau had one of the more remarkable efforts on Friday.

DeChambeau carded a six-under 65 to rally and get back to the cut line of one-over to play the weekend.

The incredible Friday came after a disastrous Thursday in which DeChambeau shot seven-over and was close to the bottom of the leaderboard.

The low round allowed DeChambeau to make the cut for just the fourth time in seven Open appearances.

He won't challenge for the Claret Jug, but if continues to play well, DeChambeau might have a shot at matching his current best Open finish, a tie for eighth in 2022.
