Xander Schauffele Has 'No Idea' Where His Tokyo Olympics Gold Medal Is, Talks Trophies

Timothy RappJul 15, 2025

Star golfer Xander Schauffele told the Associated Press on Tuesday that his parents store all of the various trophies and awards he's won over the years in San Diego, "probably in a bank vault."

Just don't ask to see the Olympic gold medal he earned at the Tokyo Games.

"I actually have no idea where that is, to be completely honest," Schauffele said.

Schauffele has won the British Open, PGA Championship and Tour Championship in his career, alongside his Olympic triumph, but he's not particularly interested in being surrounded by mementos of those achievements.

"What am I going to do with it? I don't really invite people over to my house. Am I just going to go look at it myself?" he told the AP. "I don't want to walk into a trophy room like, 'Look how great I am.' I was just raised to think that way, and it's kind of stuck."

There may come a day when Schauffele appreciates his career achievements a bit more. For now, however, he's focused on adding to that list.

"Right now I really want to keep my head down and keep charging," he said.

He will be defending his Open Championship triumph this week at Northern Ireland's Royal Portrush Golf Club on its most famous course, the Dunluce Links. Royal Portrush last hosted the event in 2019, when Ireland's Shane Lowry was victorious, and also hosted in 1951.

Schauffele—who has had his struggles this season since injuring his ribs earlier in the year—is looking forward to tackling the course.

"I was just thinking when I came over here, how just coming off of nine holes, just being a little bit more creative, tapping into that other side of your brain," he told reporters. "I was really beating up on myself for quite some time to try and get myself to play like I did last year, things of that nature, which isn't really how you're supposed to do it. But victim of that, and something about being here, you start taking your hands off the wheel, and that's how I played my best."
