Scottie Scheffler Says Winning PGA Tour Events Doesn't Ensure 'Fulfilling Life'

Adam WellsJul 15, 2025

Ahead of the final major tournament of the PGA Tour season, Scottie Scheffler got existential about why winning on the golf course isn't necessarily the most important thing to him.

Speaking to reporters from the site of the 2025 Open Championship on Tuesday, Scheffler explained that winning at golf isn't going to ensure a "fulfilling life" for him.

"This is not a fulfilling life," Scheffler said. "It's fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart."

Scheffler has spoken in the past about not building his entire identity around his job, even though he appreciates the opportunity to play golf for a living.

This is what Scheffler said leading up to the 2024 Masters about how golf doesn't "define" him:

"Golf's something that I do. It's a tremendously huge part of my life but it doesn't define me as a person. I happen to be good at it some weeks and I come in here and you guys ask all nice questions then the next week I'm bad at it and then some of the questions are viewed more negatively. That's just kind of the ebb and flow of competing in front of people all the time."

Scheffler also said at the time that golf wasn't something his parents ever pushed him to do, but it "was just something that I always loved to do."

It's actually refreshing to hear an incredibly successful athlete talk about not wrapping up all of their identity in what they do. It does mark a stark contrast to some of the stories that get told about athletes who reached the pinnacle of their sport and how singularly focused their approach was.

Whatever Scheffler is doing and how he approaches the game is working. The 29-year-old has won 16 times on the PGA Tour since 2022. No one else has more than 10 wins during that span.

Among those 16 wins, Scheffler has three victories at major tournaments. He won the Masters twice and PGA Championship in May.

A victory at the Open Championship this weekend would put Scheffler on the brink of winning the career grand slam. Only six men's players have achieved the career grand slam in the modern era.

Scheffler's best finish at the Open Championship was a tie for seventh place last year. He has finished in the top 10 twice in four career appearances at the event.
