Matt FitzgeraldJul 13, 2015

The 2015 MLB Home Run Derby is slated for Monday at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park and will introduce a unique, eight-player bracket format that promises to add a fresh spin on the annual dinger exhibition.

ESPN Stats & Info has a snapshot of the complete bracket, along with the basic rules for the revamped format:

A number of baseball's best sluggers will go head-to-head against each other until a champion is decided. Players are seeded based on their home run totals to date in the 2015 season, giving Los Angeles Angels superstar Albert Pujols the No. 1 seed.

Below is a closer look at the matchups and odds, including predictions on how the Home Run Derby will ultimately play out.

2015 MLB Home Run Derby Preview, Predictions

Bodog (h/t Odds Shark) lists Pujols, Texas Rangers star Prince Fielder and Los Angeles Dodgers prodigy Joc Pederson as co-favorites with 9-2 odds to win.

All three have merit to garner such status, but the semifinals figure to feature a Pujols-Pederson showdown, meaning one of the trio will be eliminated before the final.

Betting on the resurgent Pujols isn't a bad strategy, though he will have to work to get past Chicago Cubs rookie Kris Bryant—another young stud squarely in the National League Rookie of the Year race—in the opening round.

Since his prospective opponents are more youthful and may try to press on the big stage, a cool and collected attitude may help Pujols move along on Monday. That's a demeanor he exuded before the Derby.

"I enjoy it. I take it like it's batting practice," Pujols said of the Home Run Derby, per MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. "Don't try to do too much, and just have fun with it."

Pederson's first opponent, Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, has the longest odds to win at 10-1. This phase of the bracket shouldn't be too difficult for Pederson to navigate, and he'll be fresher than Pujols as it is.

AccuWeather.com's Kevin France is reporting Cincinnati may have to brace for a thunderstorm on Monday evening. Will Brinson of CBSSports.com weighed in on the possibility:

The presence of rain could make it more difficult to hit the ball over the fence, which provides Pederson with a distinct advantage.

According to ESPN Home Run Tracker, Pederson's 20 home runs this season have traveled an average of 430.5 feet. No matter how tough the weather makes the conditions, Pederson has a distinct advantage because the ball seems to jump off his bat even when he doesn't get all of it.

Former MLB player and ESPN analyst Doug Glanville likes Pederson's chances, per ESPN 730:

Pujols having to fend off two consecutive young guns who have plenty of pop, especially Pederson, would represent quite a tall order. The rules also give extra time the further the ball is hit—another area where Pederson figures to have an edge over the rest of his competitors.

Considering he's tasked with facing home Cincinnati Reds favorite Todd Frazier, there's a strong chance Fielder will be done after the opening round. Being on the clock with such a sense of urgency may also work against Fielder, who isn't in the same physical shape as his opponents.

Frazier will continue to feed off the energy at Great American Ball Park and run his way to the finals past the winner of Josh Donaldson vs. Anthony Rizzo. The Reds third baseman will be keen to avenge his runner-up finish from last year in front of the friendly fans.

But Pederson has the chops to play spoiler to that bid. His effortless, innate power will be enough to help him rack up homers even if he is pressing a bit too hard.

Although many fans in attendance may not appreciate seeing Pederson take down Frazier in the finals, this Home Run Derby may be what puts Pederson more squarely on the map outside of Los Angeles.
