Jake Paul's Updated WBA Ranking Revealed After Win vs. Chavez Jr. in Boxing Fight
Jake Paul moved to No. 14 in the WBA's cruiserweight rankings after earning a unanimous decision over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on June 28.
With the win, Paul improved his record to 12-1 as a professional. Now that he's a ranked fighter, he's eligible to challenge Gilberto Ramírez for the cruiserweight title.
Ramírez was among the boxers whom Paul called out in his post-fight interview. He said he wants "tougher fighters" and aspires to be a world champion:
Longtime boxing writer Dan Rafael called it "laughably and utterly predictably" that the 28-year-old was officially recognized by the WBA. Imagine what some of the reaction would be if he were granted a title shot in his next fight.
There's no question Paul put together an impressive performance against Chavez. He finished with a 140-65 edge in total punches landed and an even bigger advantage in jabs (65-8).
The judges' scorecards spoke for themselves as they had it 99-91, 97-93 and 98-92 in favor of Paul.
Still, the YouTuber-turned-pugilist may not have converted his skeptics.
Chavez, 39, is years removed from his prime and was only competing for his second time since 2021. This was a shell of the boxer who held the WBC middleweight title in 2012 and earned a crack at Canelo Álvarez in 2017.
In general, Paul has yet to shed the perception he's padding his record against aging foes or inexperienced opponents who cut their teeth in a different combat sport.
For a lot of fans, he still has to prove himself before a crack at Ramírez is justified.
