NBA Execs Reportedly Wonder if LeBron James Contract Opt-In Precursor to Trade Request

Andrew PetersJun 29, 2025

LeBron James opted into the final year of his contract on Sunday, tying him to the Los Angeles Lakers for at least one more season.

But in doing so, it led to speculation about whether he even wants to stay in Los Angeles for the 2025-26 season. Per The Athletic's Sam Amick, rival executives are "wondering if this was a precursor to a trade request."

ESPN's Shams Charania, who reported the news of James' decision to opt into his contract, noted that James' agent, Rich Paul, said James "will be closely monitoring the Lakers' moves and whether the team is positioning itself this offseason to field a title-contending roster."

Paul also said that James wants to compete for a title and understands that it might be difficult while playing on a team building for the future.

"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul said. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."

While Paul's comments say nothing definitively about James' intentions, they certainly leave the door open for the all-time great to ask out of Los Angeles if he feels the team isn't in a position to win now.

The Lakers will likely try to appease James and build a roster equipped to play for a championship this season, but ensuring the team is set up for a future centered around 26-year-old star Luka Dončić will almost certainly be the main priority.

Amick noted that James has a no-trade clause and can control his own destiny in a potential trade. If moved, it would be the first time James will have been traded in his career.
