Dennis Schroder Says He Wants New Pistons Contract But 'Detroit Ain't Waiting for Me'

Dennis Schröder indicated on Saturday that contract talks haven't progressed between himself and the Detroit Pistons.

"I want to stay in Detroit for sure, but Detroit ain't waiting for me, I can tell you that much," Schröder said in a Saturday livestream.

Schröder was traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Golden State Warriors last season before landing with the Pistons in February.

He hit free agency following the expiration of the two-year, $25.4 million contract he signed with the Toronto Raptors in 2023.

NBA insider Jake Fischer reported in May that the Pistons were "known to have interest" in bringing Schröder back in free agency despite already having Jaden Ivey and Cade Cunningham in the backcourt.

Schröder helped fill in for Ivey last season after he underwent surgery on a broken fibula in his left leg in January.

Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon said earlier this week that the team expected Ivey to be back in time for training camp, per Coty Davis of The Detroit News, but having another guard option could potentially help the Pistons manage his workload after his return.

Langdon also said this week that the Pistons have expressed interest in retaining free agents including Schröder alongside Malik Beasley and Tim Hardaway Jr. (h/t Audacy's 97.1 The Ticket.)

"We have stated that we are interested, and they’re interested in us. But again, agents have to do their job for their players, survey the market and see what’s there, and hopefully we can come to a resolution in bringing those guys back," Langdon said. "But we have to do our due diligence as well, in case they choose another destination."

Langdon concluded, "We’d like to get those guys back, but we’ll be prepared to have to go in another direction, if need be."

NBA insider Marc Stein reported on Friday that "numerous teams" believe the Sacramento Kings are the leading candidate to draw Schröder away from the Pistons in free agency.

The Kings are seeking a replacement for De'Aaron Fox after trading the point guard to the San Antonio Spurs during the 2024-25 season.

ESPN's Shams Charania has also identified Schröder as a "potential target" for the Dallas Mavericks as they look to fill in for Kyrie Irving amid his recovery from an ACL tear next season.

Schröder, who will turn 32 in September, averaged 13.1 points in 75 games split across three teams last season. He expressed frustration with the instability of the NBA's frequent trades before he was moved to the Pistons in February.
