Pistons Reportedly 'Known to Have Interest' in Dennis Schroder Return in 2025 NBA FA

On the heels of their surprise playoff appearance this season, the Detroit Pistons are keen on keeping as much of their roster together as possible.

Per NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Pistons are "known to have interest" in bringing back Dennis Schröder in free agency this summer.

Detroit's cap situation was made slightly more complicated going forward on Friday when Cade Cunningham was named to the 2024-25 All-NBA team. That honor means the five-year extension he signed last summer will now be a supermax, adding another $45 million in value to the deal ($269 million total).

The Pistons' key free agents this summer include Schröder, Malik Beasley, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Paul Reed.

Per The Athletic's Hunter Patterson, the Pistons could bring back all of those players and stay under the second tax apron even accounting for Cunningham's increased salary.

Patterson did note in that scenario the club would likely have to avoid using their cap space to bring in outside help to stay out of the second apron. The situation is also complicated because Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren are both eligible to extend off their rookie contracts this summer.

Detroit's interest in retaining Schröder is interesting because he would seem to be redundant with Ivey and Cunningham in the backcourt.

Ivey suffered a fractured fibula on Jan. 1, so the Pistons might be looking for some insurance to avoid putting too much pressure on him as he works his way back.

Schröder spent time with three different teams this season. He started the year with the Brooklyn Nets before being traded to the Golden State Warriors in December.

The Warriors flipped Schröder to Detroit in February as part of the five-team deal that sent Jimmy Butler to Golden State. Schröder was effective in 28 games with the Pistons, averaging 10.8 points and 5.3 assists per contest.
