Lakers' Rob Pelinka Spent Time with Eric Dixon Before UDFA Contract, Told Kobe Story

Joseph ZuckerJun 28, 2025

Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka evoked the memory of legend Kobe Bryant during a meeting with forward Eric Dixon ahead of the 2025 NBA draft.

ESPN's Jonathan Givony reported that Pelinka recalled when Bryant went to the Sistine Chapel on a visit to Italy.

"Pelinka said the first thing Bryant noticed was the lack of lighting and how Michelangelo was forced to do much of his work by candlelight, which demonstrated his attention to detail and the focus required to master his craft under tough conditions," Givony wrote. "Bryant related this to his work on the basketball court, imagining what Michelangelo's mindset might have been like at the time, in terms of perfecting his craft and creating a world-renowned masterpiece, despite less-than-ideal circumstances."

The anecdote must've had a positive impact in some way because Dixon agreed to a two-way deal with Los Angeles as an undrafted free agent.

The former Villanova star was the leading scorer (23.3 points) in Division I this past season. He shot 45.1 percent overall and 40.7 percent from beyond the arc. He also averaged 5.1 rebounds and 0.8 steals per game.

Dixon drew a comparison to former Golden State Warriors and Utah Jazz forward Eric Paschall in Bleacher Report's scouting report.

"Like Paschall, Dixon thrives on strength mismatches and can attack closeouts or bully smaller defenders in space," the report said.

"Both are undersized for traditional big roles. But both compensate with craft, touch, and a strong lower body."

The Lakers are aiming for a deep playoff run in 2025-26, and it can be hard for a young player to break through on a team with those kind of short-term priorities.

However, Los Angeles will benefit from developing its younger talent as it considers how to construct a supporting cast around Luka Dončić in the years ahead. Players on small, cost-controlled contracts will be worth their weight in gold within that context.

Perhaps Dixon will emerge over time as a good secondary piece in the frontcourt.
