WWE's Roman Reigns Joins 'Street Fighter' Movie Cast Alongside Jason Momoa, More
WWE Superstar Roman Reigns was reportedly confirmed Thursday as a cast member for the upcoming Street Fighter movie.
According to Borys Kit of the Hollywood Reporter, Reigns will play the role of Akuma, which is a character first introduced in the Super Street Fighter II Turbo video game in 1994.
Joining Reigns in the cast is rapper 50 Cent as Balrog, country singer Orville Peck as Vega, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken and Callina Liang as Chun-Li.
Deadline.com's Matt Grobar was the first to report on Reigns' potential involvement in Street Fighter last month.
The movie is based on the hugely popular and successful Street Fighter video game franchise, which began with an arcade release in 1987. The franchise first became a phenomenon in 1991 when Street Fighter II released in arcades and on the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis home consoles.
Reigns, 40, is arguably the biggest star in wrestling currently. He is best known for his 1,316-day WWE world title reign, which ended with a loss to Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 last year.
He has worked a part-time schedule since then and has not been seen on WWE programming since the post-WrestleMania 41 edition of Raw in April.
On Thursday, WrestleVotes reported that Reigns' name has recently been mentioned internally in WWE, which is a likely sign that plans are in place for his return.
Produced by Capcom and Legendary, and directed by Kitao Sakuri, Street Fighter is set to begin production in Australia in August.
SummerSlam will take place over two nights on Aug. 2 and 3, so while that could still allow for Reigns to be part of the show, the timeline suggests Reigns may have to take more time off after SummerSlam to film for Street Fighter.
