DeMarcus Cousins Apologizes in IG Photo After Video of Clash With Fans in Puerto Rico
Former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins is showing contrition for his involvement in an altercation with fans while he was playing for the Mets de Guaynabo that resulted in a suspension from the Puerto Rican Professional Basketball League for the remainder of the season.
"I want to apologize to the fans of Puerto Rico for my actions," Cousins wrote his Instagram Story on Thursday (h/t TMZ).
Cousins got into it with a fan who was sitting courtside in Monday's game at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez arena, which resulted in his ejection. As he walked off the court, he flipped off the crowd, and fans threw drinks and popcorn at him as he was taken off the court. He had to be held back by police and security to stop him from going after fans even further.
TMZ noted that in addition to his suspension, Cousins was fined "at least $4,250," and his contract with the Mets was terminated. He originally signed with the organization in April for his second stint with the team.
Cousins played 11 seasons in the NBA and was once one of the best centers in the league. He earned four straight All-Star appearances from 2015 to 2018, but his career took a drastic turn when he suffered a torn Achilles in 2018 and a torn ACL the following year. He last played in the NBA in 2022.
Since his departure from the NBA, Cousins has continued to play professionally in Puerto Rico, Taiwan and Mongolia. He led the Taiwan Beer Tigers to a T1 League championship and was named T1 League Finals MVP in 2024.
