Saint Mary's 6, No. 8 Oregon State 4
The biggest upset on day one of the NCAA tournament saw Oregon State, the No. 8 national seed, lose at home for the first time in a month to Saint Mary's in the final game on Friday at the Corvallis Regional.
Saint Mary's stormed out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning due to some wild pitching from Oregon State. Starter Eric Segura only recorded one out, hit three batters with a pitch and walked in a run with the bases loaded.
Gavin Turley got the Beavers back into the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third.
After AJ Hutcheson did a terrific job of stabilizing the pitching for Oregon State, allowing just three hits and striking out five in five shutout innings, Laif Palmer was unable to keep the momentum going in the top of the seventh.
Brian Duroff's three-run homer with two outs gave the Gaels a 6-2 advantage.
The Beavers came back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to close the deficit to 6-4. They had the tying run at the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Dallas Macias and Bryce Hubbard struck out against Kellan Oakes to end the game.
Oregon State will face TCU on Saturday needing a win to keep its season alive. Saint Mary's and USC will play in the nightcap at 9 p.m. ET.
No. 2 Texas 7, Houston Christian 1
The Longhorns took a step in the right direction after falling short in the SEC Tournament.
The Longhorns were the regular season champions of the SEC but fell in their first game to Tennessee. This dropped them to the No. 2 national seed and put some pressure on the Longhorns to show what they can do.
Texas was held scoreless in the first two innings but two hits and a few errors from Houston Christian led to the Longhorns going up 2-0 in the third. Houston Christian cut the deficit to one in the top of the third and thats score held until the fifth.
In the fifth, Texas really poured it on.
The Longhorns scored five runs on six hits and blew the game open 7-1. They would hold it down from this point and advance to the winner's side of the bracket.
No. 5 North Carolina, Holy Cross 0
Some timely hitting in the middle innings and a strong performance on the mound guided North Carolina to a quick victory in their regional.
North Carolina produced four runs on seven hits, with all of the runs coming in the fourth-and-fifth innings. The star of the day, however, was starting pitcher Jake Knapp.
Knapp went 8.1 innings and only allowed four hits and three walks while striking out seven. He improved to 13-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.98.
Walker McDuffie would enter in the ninth to close out the game and put the Tar Heels two wins away from a spot in the super regional.
East Carolina 11, Florida 6
The Florida Gators are officially fending off elimination.
The second seed in the Conway Regional could not hold off a relentless East Carolina offense that hung 11 runs on the Gators.
The Pirates went up 2-0 in the first, 4-0 in the second, 6-0 in the third and then 9-0 by the fourth inning. The Gators would put up two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth but entered the bottom of the right trailing 11-2.
Florida but up a valiant effort in the eighth and ninth to cut the deficit to five but were unable to pull fully back.
Florida will now await the loser of Coastal Carolina and Fairfield and will need to avenge the loss against the Pirates later in the weekend to advance.
No. 1 Vanderbilt 4, Wright State 3
The No. 1 overall seed looked in danger of an upset loss in Friday night's regional round action.
Wright State hit an RBI double and two solo home runs off Vanderbilt starter JD Thompson to storm out to 3-0 lead through four innings.
The Raiders held onto that lead through seven innings, when Brodie Johnston got the Commodores on the board with a solo home run.
Mike Mancini put Vanderbilt within one run of tying the game with a home run in the bottom of the eighth.
Riley Nelson followed that up with a two-RBI homer to give the Commodores their first lead of the night.
Wright State is now set to play ETSU in a Saturday elimination game at 3 p.m. ET.
Clemson 7, UPST 3
A clutch outing from Cam Cannarella helped Clemson emerge victorious from a back-and-forth battle with USC Upstate.
USC Upstate got off to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a home run from Johnny Sweeney in the second inning and RBI single from Gage Griggs in the fourth.
Clemson answered with a three-run bottom of the fifth to grab the lead before USC Upstate tied the game again at the top of the eighth.
The Spartans didn't have long to enjoy the even score. A four-run bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a two-RBI homer from Cannarella, put the Tigers ahead for good.
Clemson will advance to face West Virginia in the winner's bracket on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
