Draymond Green Has Hilarious Retort to Kyrie Irving: 'I'd Be Anthony Davis'
Guess what, Kyrie Irving?
Draymond Green can speak in impossible hypotheticals, too.
During an appearance on The Big Podcast with Shaquille O'Neal, Irving took a half-bold leap, saying that he thought the Cleveland Cavaliers "would have definitely won an NBA championship if everyone was healthy."
This, of course, implies that a fully stocked Cavaliers squad would have upended the reigning champion Golden State Warriors. And, naturally, that's an implication Green resents.
When asked about Irving's assertion, Green frowned, rolled his eyes, scrunched his head in amusement and, via Bay Area Sports Guy's Steve Berman (h/t CBS Sports), said: "Larry O'Brien resides in Oakland, California. So, you know, if I was 6'11", I think I could be like Anthony Davis."
Oh, snap. This Green kid has jokes.
But he's not all snark and eye-rolls. He has a point.
"But I'm not. And I'm not like Anthony Davis," he continued. "We all got our ifs in life. If this would've happened, I would be doing this. If that would've happened, I would be doing that. But if 'if' was a fifth, we all would be drunk right now."
OK, so he's peddling barbed sarcasm and a legitimate point.
"If" and "almosts" count for absolutely nothing—something Irving, to his credit, did admit to Shaq.
We have no way of knowing which team would have won if Cleveland had both Kevin Love and Irving. We can debate, argue and even engage in open-hand slapping squabbles, but there's no correct or testable answer.
To that end, CBS Sports' Matt Moore cautioned against oversimplifying this entire issue:
"The Irving and Love injuries were certainly disappointing for all basketball fans and a significant blow to Cleveland. Unfortunately for those that would want to boil down their impacts to simple narratives, the reality is far more complicated.
We know that the Cavaliers aren't as talented or as good of a basketball team without Irving and Love. As for what would have happened had they played? Like any hypothetical, it truly is unknowable.
"
A little way down the road—in, say, the year 2437—when time machines (presumably) exist as everyman possessions, we can run the clock back to 2015, prevent Love's and Irving's injuries and see what happens.
For now, though, we have only our imagination, and the possibility of Cleveland and Golden State meeting again next season, around the same time, facing the same stakes, with equally healthy personnel at their disposals.
In the meantime, feel free to invest your precious energy in a more pressing task—refreshing Twitter every 15 seconds as you wait for Anthony Davis' emoji-formed response to Draymond Green's saucy name-drop, for instance.
