Thursday Games
No. 1 Georgia Tech def. No. 16 Cal, 10-3
Georgia Tech is the No. 1 seed for a reason.
While 16th-seeded Cal impressed by making it to the quarterfinals with two straight wins, it ran out of steam against the powerful Yellow Jackets in a 10-3 loss. The victors wasted no time setting the tone with four runs in the first inning and then blew things open with a five-run eighth.
Drew Burress, Kyle Lodise and Caleb Daniel all launched home runs for Georgia Tech in that first inning, which would have been enough to win.
However, the fireworks were far from done.
Drew Rogers and Alex Hernandez each hit solo home runs later in the game, while Vahn Lackey hit an inside-the-park home run. As if that wasn't enough, Burress went deep again with a three-run long ball in the eighth.
The offense was the story, but Georgia Tech starting pitcher Tate McKee also impressed with 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
No. 5 Clemson def. No. 4 NC State 7-6
Clemson is one step closer to its 12th ACC Tournament title after taking down NC State on Thursday.
The Tigers got on the board early, scoring in the second on a sac fly from Jacob Jarrell, but NC State took the lead in the fourth on an RBI single followed by a wild pitch that allowed a runner to score.
The lead changed hands again in the fifth after an RBI bunt from Andrew Ciufo and Clemson added another to make it 3-2 when Jarren Purify laid down another RBI bunt.
NC State responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth, and Clemson answered right back with a solo home run from Jarrell.
The Wolfpack added a pair of runs in the sixth inning to once again take the lead, but Clemson's offense came to life for three runs in the eighth.
NC State tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Clemson's eighth inning rally gave the Tigers enough to hang on for the win.
Up next for Clemson is a matchup with top-seed Georgia Tech on Saturday.
