No. 16 California def. No. 8 Wake Forest, 14-12
Cal, the lowest-seeded team in the tournament, continued its run with a 14-12 win over No. 8 Wake Forest.
Cal right fielder Jacob French led the way with four hits, three runs and three RBI in six at-bats. Shortstop PJ Moutzouridis added three more hits and two walks, while left fielder Carl Schmidt smacked a three-run homer. Catcher Alex Birge walked five times.
The Golden Bears scored six in the second inning, with the big hits being a Max Handron two-RBI double and a two-RBI single from French. That kicked off a back-and-forth affair with plenty of scoring.
Wake Forest scored three in the second and one in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-4, but Cal responded with three runs in the sixth. However, Wake scored three in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-run homer from Dalton Wentz and a solo shot via Jimmy Keenan.
Cal then scored five unanswered runs over the seventh (four) and eighth (one) innings. Schmidt's homer proved to be the big blast.
Wake Forest responded with five unanswered runs over the eighth and ninth innings. Austin Hawke hit a solo homer in the eighth. In the ninth, Javar Williams' two-RBI single made the score 14-12 and put runners on the corners with two out. However, a groundout to second ended the game.
Hawke and Wentz were the big hitters for Wake Forest. Hawke had two hits and four runs, while Wentz had two hits, three runs and three RBI.
Cal now advances to the quarterfinals to play No. 1 seed Georgia Tech on Thursday.
No. 5 Clemson def. No. 12 Virginia Tech, 6-1
Clemson left fielder Dominic Listi hit a two-run double and a two-run homer to lead the Tigers to a 6-1 win over Virginia Tech.
Listi's two-run homer capped a three-run first inning to give Clemson a 3-1 lead after one. He then smacked a two-run double in the fifth for a 5-1 edge. Cam Cannarella's sixth-inning sac fly closed the scoring at 6-1.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher Aidan Knaak excelled on the mound, tossing six innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts, allowing just four hits and a walk.
Virginia Tech's lone run was courtesy of a Ben Watson leadoff homer.
Hokies starting pitcher Brett Renfrow also struck out 10 batters in 5.1 frames.
Clemson will now face No. 4 seed North Carolina State in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
No. 7 Duke def. No. 15 Pitt, 4-3
It seemed like Pitt's Cinderella run was going to continue when it took a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning of its game against Duke.
But the Blue Devils had other ideas.
Duke pushed across two runs in the bottom of the ninth to literally walk off the Panthers. Jake Hyde worked a bases-loaded walk to win the game after Macon Winslow launched a solo homer to tie the game at the start of the half-frame.
The homer and walk completed the comeback for the Blue Devils after they fell behind 3-0 through the first three innings.
AJ Gracia's RBI double in the fifth and solo homer in the seventh cut the deficit to 3-2 heading into the final few innings and set the stage for Duke's dramatic walk-off win.
Next up for the Blue Devils is a showdown against second-seeded Florida State, which is yet to play a game in this tournament thanks to a double-bye.
No. 14 Boston College def. No. 6 Virginia, 12-8
Boston College keeps on rolling in conference-tournament play after a 12-8 victory over Virginia in the nightcap on Wednesday.
The first two innings saw both teams break out the bats. They combined to score 11 of the game's 20 runs in the opening two frames, with Boston College putting up five in the first inning alone.
After Boston College added two more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 9-4, the Cavaliers responded in the bottom of the sixth. They scored four times to cut the deficit to one, with Henry Ford's three-run homer being the big blast.
Josiah Ragsdale provided insurance for the Eagles in the top of the eighth with a two-run double. They added another run later in the inning when Ragsdale came around to score on a wild pitch.
Cesar Gonzalez was terrific in relief for the Eagles. The right-hander tossed three scoreless innings with six strikeouts to close out the game.
The win sends Boston College into the quarterfinals against No. 3 North Carolina. These two teams played a three-game series at Harrington Athletics Village in March, with the Tar Heels winning twice.
