Event History
3 of 3
The Bay to Breakers race began in 1912 as a means of rejuvenating the city of San Francisco after a 1906 earthquake took the lives of 3,000 citizens. It worked, and in 1986, the race set the mark for the largest footrace when 110,000 descended on the Bay Area for the race.
Over the years, the event has become defined by the creativity of its participants, with friends, families, and entire groups devising the most unique and inventive costumes. The fun-loving environment, the exuberance of the racers, and flamboyance of some of the outfits (and lack thereof of others), has garnered the race the reputation of the "Mardi Gars of the West."
It is against that background that approximately 15,000 racers will take to the course in San Francisco, where they will not only participate in the race, but will also find countless events and activities surrounding it, including a beer garden and finish line festival awaiting runners afternoon the 12K race.
One of the most original, historic, and popular races in the country, it remains a staple of the running calendar.
