NBA Execs Reportedly 'Question' If Nets Could Contend With Giannis Amid Trade Rumors
The Brooklyn Nets have been rumored to be interested in pursuing a trade for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason. Still, not everyone is convinced that adding him would turn them into title contenders.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype spoke to "rival executives" who "question how the Nets would surround [Antetokounmpo] with championship-contending talent next season, given the treasure chest of draft picks it would likely take and salaries such as Nic Claxton to make a trade happen on paper."
After a report from ESPN's Shams Charania revealed that Antetokounmpo "is open-minded about exploring whether his best long-term fit is remaining in Milwaukee or playing elsewhere," the Nets quickly emerged as a potential landing spot for the two-time NBA MVP.
Brian Lewis of the New York Post followed up on Charania's report by stating, "Teams are expected to go from just loosely monitoring the situation to being on high alert. And the Nets will be one of them." Lewis added that Antetokounmpo "has long been viewed as the Nets’ prime target."
However, Brooklyn is coming off a 26-56 finish to the 2024-25 campaign. In addition to dealing with injuries throughout the year, the team suffered from a lack of high-end talent with a roster that was without a superstar player.
Antetokounmpo would instantly fill that hole, but adding him alone won't be enough to make the Nets one of the top contenders in the Eastern Conference, which is full of rising teams who are motivated to compete for an NBA championship.
Still, it wouldn't be a surprise if Brooklyn did everything it possibly could to bring in Antetokounmpo this offseason and appease its starving fan base.
