NBA Insider Expects Nets to Pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Amid Bucks Rumors
After the revelation that Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo will be open to exploring his options this summer, one insider believes the Brooklyn Nets will be at the front of the line to try to acquire him.
Brian Lewis of the New York Post reported, "Teams are expected to go from just loosely monitoring the situation to being on high alert. And the Nets will be one of them."
ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Monday that "for the first time in his career, Antetokounmpo is open-minded about exploring whether his best long-term fit is remaining in Milwaukee or playing elsewhere." While teams around the league have routinely checked on Antetokounmpo's availability throughout the years, they're reportedly "expected to ramp up due diligence during combine week."
According to Lewis, Antetokounmpo "has long been viewed as the Nets’ prime target," and the team "has been amassing draft capital and assets with acquiring Antetokounmpo as the proverbial white whale." Lewis further explained that Brooklyn "leads the NBA in not only salary-cap room (over $50 million) but also future draft picks (31) and future first-rounders (15)," putting the franchise in a strong position to acquire a superstar player.
Antetokounmpo's future with the Bucks became unclear after their third straight year being eliminated from the playoffs in the first round. Since winning the NBA championship in 2021, Milwaukee has yet to make it back to the conference finals.
It can be expected that the two-time NBA MVP would be looking to land with a title contender if he leaves the Bucks, and the Nets have a lot of work to do to return to contention. Brooklyn went 26-56 this season and missed the playoffs for the second straight year while suffering from a lack of significant star power.
The biggest storyline of the offseason will be Antetokounmpo's potential trade candidacy, and it appears that the Nets are hoping to win the grand prize of acquiring him.
