Angels to Decide Street's Status After Throwing Session
Thursday, July 16
After Street completes his bullpen session Thursday, the Angels will decide whether to place him on the disabled list or keep him active, according to Mike DiGiovanna of theย Los Angeles Times.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia announced on July 9 that Smith will be the interim closer, per Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
โIt definitely does not feel very severe today, which is a great sign," said Street, per Fletcher.
Scioscia didn't sound asย optimistic, also per Fletcher: "Weโre certainly going to err on the side of caution. Weโll see how he progresses over the weekend, and then with four days of the All-Star break, weโll be able to evaluate where Huston is."
Prior to his injury, Street was second in the American League in saves (24). He has a 2.27 ERA in 35.2 innings pitched.
Smith, meanwhile, has been fantastic out of the bullpen in 2015. He is 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 38 appearances. Smith is no stranger to coming on in the ninth. He saved 15 games for the Angels in 2014.
Since Street's injury doesn't appear to be too serious, Angels fans shouldn't begin panicking. Add in Smith's closing experience, and the back end of L.A.'s bullpen should be in good hands.
