5 San Francisco 49ers Destined to Fill Shoes of Departing Fan Favorites
Who will fill the void left by a string of departed fan favorites? That is the question facing the San Francisco 49ers after an offseason defined by the loss of key players.
Patrick Willis and Justin Smith have both called it a career, while the 49ers' all-time leading rusher, Frank Gore, left for the Indianapolis Colts during free agency. This seemingly leaves supporters with few players capable of capturing the heart of the fanbase in the way that trio did during its storied stint with the franchise.
Indeed, the 49ers roster now looks a lot younger and more inexperienced. However, it does boast players capable of taking the places of Willis and Gore. These are players who can establish themselves as fan favorites thanks to the foresight of general manager Trent Baalke, who has done a good job off ensuring this team has plenty of young talent.
Fans would be forgiven for feeling disconnected from the team following the exits of those longtime 49er stalwarts. But here, I look at five players with the opportunity, talent and personality to take over from Willis, Smith and Gore as the stars of a franchise looking to reinvent itself under new head coach Jim Tomsula.
Carlos Hyde

Frank Gore's exit in free agency marked the end of an era for the 49ers, as one of their greatest offensive players bid farewell to the team. However, it was not a completely unexpected departure, and it provides Gore's successor with the opportunity to establish himself as the focal point of an offense likely to be based around the run game.
San Francisco took Carlos Hyde in the second round in 2014, and while Gore got the bulk of the carries last season, the former Ohio State back flashed signs of the talent that convinced the 49ers to select him. Hyde may have only put up 333 yards and four touchdowns, but his qualities were there for all to see.
A bruising one-cut runner, Hyde demonstrated the power, burst and toughness to be the Niners' bell cow for years to come. Although he still needs to develop his vision and patience and could stand to improve in pass protection and as a pass-catcher, Hyde has the physical tools to carry the load and serve as an intimidating offensive presence who plays in a manner that 49ers fans should enjoy.
Reggie Bush, Kendall Hunter and Mike Davis may take some carries away from Hyde. But, if the ex-Buckeye performs to his potential, then he will quickly take the jump from young player with extreme promise to a star name. This would come on an offense that needs to make big strides to help the 49ers bounce back from last season's disappointment.
Eric Reid

Despite losing Patrick Willis and Justin Smith, the 49ers still have a bona fide fan favorite on defense. NaVorro Bowman cemented his legacy with game-winning plays in the NFC Championship Game in 2012 and the Niners' final appearance at Candlestick Park. The inside linebacker is the most recognizable face on the 49ers defense, but safety Eric Reid could soon join him in that regard.
Reid made the Pro Bowl after an excellent rookie year, and although he did struggle last season, he still has the potential to be one of the better safeties in the NFL, with B/R's Matt Miller ranking him at No. 27 in the league at that position.
The former LSU star has been a consistent contributor for the 49ers, recording seven interceptions in two seasons. Fans always appreciate players who make an impact, yet Reid boosted his stock further late last season by taking pregame huddles, as he showcased himself as capable of being a leader on the defense.
Bowman is the natural replacement for Willis in terms of becoming the heart and soul of the defense and the team overall. However, other players on defensive coordinator Eric Mangini's unit will certainly be expected to lead by example, just as Smith did in his 14-year career.
Reid fits the bill and has already proved he can make an impression on the field and on his teammates in the huddle. Should he continue to do that in 2015, then younger players and fans alike will take notice.
Darnell Dockett

For over a decade, Darnell Dockett was a scourge for the 49ers, operating as one of the key players on a tough Arizona Cardinals defense. Now, after a year off due to injury, he will look to provide a defensive spark for San Francisco in the latter stages of a solid career.
Dockett is coming off a torn ACL and is now 34 years of age, but he has proved himself as a pass-rusher in his time in the pros. He should prove to be a threat to opposing quarterbacks from his 3-4 end spot as well as a player capable of offering leadership to a young defensive front following the retirement of Justin Smith.
The three-time Pro Bowler's voice is sure to carry a fair amount of weight in the locker room. His brash and outspoken personality will likely also help him capture the hearts of the 49ers fans as he makes the transition from divisional foe to a senior member of a San Francisco defense that's aiming to prove it can overcome the offseason losses.
Dockett has a consistent history of production, having put up 40.5 sacks in his career. He is unlikely to be an every-down player because of the depth the Niners have up front. Yet, if he can make an impact as a pass-rusher and play with the same attitude he displayed in 11 years with the Cardinals, then it should not take long for Dockett to become a favorite with the 49ers.
Torrey Smith

It has been a long time since the 49ers have had a truly dynamic wide receiver on their offense.
Not since the days of Terrell Owens have the Niners possessed a wideout who is a real game-changer, even though the likes of Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree have both contributed significantly in recent years.
Crabtree had one 1,000-yard season in 2012 en route to the Super Bowl, and Boldin has put up four figures in each of his two years in San Francisco. But neither of those players has the ability to challenge defenses deep like Torrey Smith. The Niners inked Smith to a five-year, $40 million deal in free agency, taking the gamble on a pass-catcher who can open things up and stretch the field.
Smith actually had his worst year in terms of catches and receiving yards in his final season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2014, putting up 767 yards on 49 receptions. However, he also caught the most touchdown passes of his career, hauling in 11.
Coming into an offense led by a quarterback with the arm of Colin Kaepernick that has other targets, such as Boldin and Vernon Davis, who can divert the defense's attention away from him, Smith has landed in an ideal situation in which to improve on his numbers from the previous campaign.
With his combination of speed (4.43 40-yard dash) and size (6'0", 205 lbs), Smith has the tools to build an immediate rapport with Kaepernick. Should he do so, then there is little to stop him from putting up some impressive statistics and becoming one of the star names on this remodeled 49ers team.
Aldon Smith
5 of 5
Aldon Smith should already be a league-wide star, but off-field issues have put the pass-rusher in a position where he is playing for his 49ers future.
Smith restructured his contract with the Niners in the offseason, turning a $9.75 million salary that was set to be fully guaranteed into a series of roster bonuses. Essentially, the 49ers have asked the former Missouri star to prove himself after putting up just two sacks following his nine-game suspension last year.
But, with a so far trouble-free offseason under his belt, there is little doubt Smith has the explosive talent to replicate the first two seasons of his career, which saw him rack up 33.5 sacks.
Should he get back to his best, the 49ers will likely try to sign Smith to a contract extension during the season to avoid a bidding war when he becomes a free agent in the 2016 offseason.
With the departures San Francisco has endured, Smith has a real opportunity to establish himself as the predominant force on the defense alongside NaVorro Bowman and earn a lucrative long-term deal.
Dominant defenders have always been popular across the league and in San Francisco, where the likes of Charles Haley, Fred Dean and Ronnie Lott are all enshrined as franchise greats. Smith has the tools to join them and to resurrect his career and his popularity with the 49ers fans. If he stays out of trouble, it would be tough to bet against him doing so.
