A year ago, Seth Rollins was involved in every major moment at WrestleMania 40.
He teamed with Cody Rhodes in a loss to The Rock and Roman Reigns on Saturday, dropped the World Heavyweight Championship to Drew McIntyre in the opening match of Sunday, and returned to the squared circle to play mind games with The Tribal Chief and absorb a steel chair shot to the back that allowed The American Nightmare to capitalize and win the main event.
He was, as he noted leading into that event, the one man uniquely qualified to serve as Rhodes' shield and ensure the Reigns run as champion would come to an end. He did just that and emerged as the heart and soul of that broadcast.
This year, his narrative is that of a dismayed Superstar, a top-level competitor who has sacrificed everything for WWE, only to watch as fans and friends alike have pledged their allegiance to Reigns and CM Punk, the two men he despises more than any.
Vowing to do what is "best for business," Rollins has positioned himself as the tweener entering Saturday's main event, neither a hero nor villain. "That's not a prediction, that's a spoiler," he said, mocking one of Paul Heyman's most memorable catchphrases.
The question is what 'best for business' equates to.
Does he turn heel and align himself with The Rock and John Cena, who utilized that rhetoric ahead of his unforgettable heel turn at Elimination Chamber? Perhaps. It would certainly be the biggest twist anyone could expect from this year's show.
Perhaps he simply beats two of the biggest stars in the industry and announces to his doubters that he is a marquee star deserving of the same respect they receive.
Whatever the case, based on the intensely personal promo he delivered Friday night on SmackDown, expect Rollins to be one among the most buzzworthy stars to emerge from this year's Showcase of the Immortals.
