Ranking the Top 10 Tag Team Title Matches in WWE WrestleMania History
While some years didn't have a tag title match, various versions of the WWE World Tag Team Championships have been defended at more WrestleManias than anything else except the men's world title.
This is especially true when you take into account that some years included two matches for the Raw and SmackDown belts.
Over the past four decades, we have watched well over 100 Superstars vie for tag team gold on The Grandest Stage of Them All. The list of competitors is full of current and future Hall of Famers.
While compiling this list, one thing became clear: The tag titles and ladder matches go hand in hand, especially at WrestleMania.
Let's take a look at the 10 best tag team title matches at The Showcase of the Immortals.
10. WrestleMania 31 Usos vs. New Day vs. Matadores vs. Cesaro and Tyson Kidd
1 of 10Kickoff shows before The Show of Shows no longer have matches, but at WrestleMania 31, one of the pre-show bouts ended up being one of the better contests that night.
The Usos and The New Day are going to appear a few times on this list because they have been so integral to the tag team division in WWE for the past decade, but this bout also included Primo, Epico, Cesaro and Tyson Kidd.
Putting aside the ridiculous matador gimmick WWE had Primo and Epico using at the time, all eight men in this match are gifted wrestlers and turned in a great performance that night.
Kidd and Cesaro retained the belts that night in what ended up being the former's final 'Mania performance before an injury cut his in-ring career short way too soon. This bout is a great example of what a tremendous worker he was.
9. WrestleMania 14 Dumpster Match
2 of 10WWE's history with hardcore wrestling has had its ups and downs, but one of the most memorable matches to fit that category took place at WrestleMania 14 with four men who are already in the Hall of Fame.
Mick Foley and Terry Funk teamed up as Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie to take on Road Dogg and Billy Gunn in a Dumpster match that was as chaotic as it was entertaining.
This was the height of the Attitude Era, so WWE was looking for anything and everything that would shock the crowd and create headlines. Having a man run around threatening to kill The New Age Outlaws with a chainsaw did the trick.
Nobody is going to credit this as a technical clinic, but it's beautiful professional wrestling nonsense in its purest form.
WrestleMania 2 British Bulldogs vs. Dream Team
3 of 10The oldest match to appear on this list took place at one of the most infamous WrestleManias of all time.
The second edition of the PPV took place in three different cities, so each venue hosted four matches live across the night. The tag titles served as the main event of the Chicago portion of the show.
The British Bulldog and The Dynamite Kid, along with Lou Albano and Ozzy Osbourne, took on Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake with Johnny Valiant in their corner.
This bout ended up being the best bell-to-bell match on the entire show, which isn't saying much compared to most of what we got that night, but it was still a standout performance.
7. WrestleMania 35 Fatal 4-Way Tag Match
4 of 10The last time WWE held WrestleMania on only one day was in 2019 for its 35th edition. It was also one of the longest with 16 matches and a runtime of over five hours for the main show plus an additional two hours of pre-show action.
About halfway through the show, four teams fought over the SmackDown tag titles. The Usos, Sheamus and Cesaro, Ricochet and Aleister Black, and the odd couple of Rusev and Shinsuke Nakamura.
The randomness of some of these teams may lead some to assume this was a run-of-the-mill tag bout, but the eight men packed a lot into 10 minutes to give us an exciting title fight.
The Usos came into the show as the champions and left with the belts still around their waists. Go back and check this one out again. It might surprise you.
6. WrestleMania 36 Triple Threat Ladder Match
5 of 10WrestleMania 36, also known as the one with no fans due to the pandemic, was a unique event in the history of WWE.
This was before WWE was experimenting with the ThunderDome and small groups of wrestlers filling in for the crowd, so there was a creepy silence that accompanied most of the show.
The Miz was forced to skip the event due to medical reasons, so WWE came up with a unique solution. Instead of having The A-Lister and John Morrison vacate the titles, management opted to book one member from each team to compete in a Triple Threat ladder match.
Morrison, Kofi Kingston and Jimmy Uso made the best of the situation and ended up giving us one of the best contests across both days of WrestleMania.
It might seem strange to see a match from the pandemic era with no fans on this list, but if you go back and watch it just to focus on the wrestling, it's a top-tier performance worthy of praise.
5. WrestleMania 40 Six-Pack Ladder Match
6 of 10WrestleMania 40 played host to the biggest tag title match in the event's history when six teams competed in a ladder match for the Raw and SmackDown belts.
Austin Theory, Grayson Waller, The Miz, R-Truth, Finn Balor, Damian Priest, Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa, Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate made up the list of competitors that night.
This was the kind of contest that is overbooked by design. WWE packed as much into it as possible, and it led to an entertaining bout that had an interesting ending.
The Raw tag titles were retrieved by Awesome Truth while the SmackDown belts were taken by A-Town Down Under. Shortly after the PPV, the titles were renamed the World Tag Team Championships and WWE Tag Team Championships, respectively, to avoid confusion if teams jumped brands while holding the gold.
Most people probably remember WrestleMania 40 for the main event, and rightfully so, but the six-pack ladder match was tons of fun and worth revisiting.
4. WrestleMania 33 Brings Back a Legendary Team
7 of 10Matt and Jeff Hardy appear a few times on this list, with their most recent performance in the top 10 being their comeback at WrestleMania 33.
The best thing about this surprise was that rumors of their return didn't circulate very much before the PPV, so their appearance was a genuine shock to many fans.
Along with Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, Cesaro, Sheamus, Enzo Amore and Big Cass, the Hardys put on a fantastic ladder match to add to their already impressive list of accomplishments.
The pop from their familiar entrance music hitting is still one of the biggest reactions at any WrestleMania.
3. WrestleMania 16 Triple Threat Ladder Match
8 of 10The Hardy Boyz, Dudleys, Edge and Christian have a long shared history, but their first big encounter took place at WrestleMania 16 in a ladder match that redefined the stipulation.
The six men came into this PPV looking to steal the show and that's exactly what they did. Not only did they put on one of the best ladder matches of all time, but they also managed to make this the most memorable match from the card.
Quick, without looking it up, do you remember what main-evented WrestleMania 2000?
It was Triple H vs. The Rock vs. Big Show vs. Mick Foley. It wasn't a bad match, but it wasn't what made this PPV special. That was the three teams who managed to put on a career-making performance and inspired WWE to create an entirely new match stipulation at the same time with their creative use of tables and chairs.
2. WrestleMania 39 Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens vs. The Usos
9 of 10For the last few years, members of The Bloodline have been involved in some of the biggest feuds and storylines in WWE, and one of the biggest encounters took place at WrestleMania 39.
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens were back on the same page and looking to dethrone The Usos as the undisputed tag team champions.
The storyline was the driving force behind this match, but the four men in the ring are the reason why this is one of the best tag title matches in WWE history.
They combined drama from their feud with intense action to create a fantastic main event for Night 1 of 'Mania. It was a feel-good moment to see the longtime friends take down the evil twins of The Bloodline at the biggest show of the year.
The journey was made more special by not only the long path it took to get to that match, but also by the much longer bond shared by the winners.
Owens and Zayn will forever be linked in their wrestling careers as both friends and rivals, and this is one of the best chapters in their shared biography.
1. WrestleMania 17 Tables, Ladders and Chairs
10 of 10TLC matches have become a staple in WWE over the past 20-plus years, but it all started at WrestleMania 17 with the best tag title match in the history of the event.
The Hardys, Edge, Christian and the Dudleys were already well-acquainted by this point, especially after their lauded ladder match the year prior, so they went into this bout looking to outdo their previous performance.
It's hard to describe exactly what makes this match so special. It has several memorable moments, it put some young stars on the map, and it gave two popular ECW mainstays more time in the spotlight.
The brutality matched the level of spectacle and made this one of the most exciting and rewatchable WrestleMania bouts of all time. The fact that most of these guys are still working 23 years later after what they put themselves through is a testament to their resilience.
