Rory McIlroy Talks 'Narratives' and 'Noise' amid Career Grand Slam Pursuit at Masters
Rory McIlroy is well aware of how close he is to completing the career grand slam if he can win the Masters, so he's doing his best to avoid outside distractions leading up to the start of this year's tournament at Augusta National Golf Club.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, McIlroy talked about wanting to "block out" all of the "narratives" and "noise" around his pursuit of history:
"It's just narratives. It's noise. It's just trying to block out that noise as much as possible. I need to treat this tournament like all the other tournaments that I play throughout the year. Look, I understand the narrative and the noise, and there's a lot of anticipation and buildup coming into this tournament each and every year, but I just have to keep my head down and focus on my job."

McIlroy has been a victory at the Masters away from completing the career grand slam since 2014. That was the year he won the PGA Championship and Open Championship in the same season.
The 2014 Open Championship also marks McIlroy's last victory in a major tournament. He has come close to winning several times, with 10 top-five finishes in the big four events since 2015.
Within that group of 10 top-five finishes was McIlroy's best showing at the Masters. He finished second to Scottie Scheffler in 2022 after an incredible Sunday in which he carded a 64, tied for the best final-round score in Masters history.
McIlroy's last two appearances at the Masters haven't gone. He missed the cut in 2023 and finished tied for 22nd in 2024.
The closest McIlroy has come to ending his drought in major tournaments was last year at the U.S. Open. After building up a two-shot lead, he bogeyed three of the final four holes that included missing par putts within three feet of the hole on 16 and 18.
McIlroy dropped to five-under par, opening the door for Bryson DeChambeau to get the victory by one stroke.
The 35-year-old McIlroy is entering the Masters with some positive momentum. He already has two wins this season, including the Players Championship, and tied for fifth two weeks ago at the Houston Open.
McIlroy will tee off at the 2025 Masters in a group with Ludvig Åberg and Akshay Bhatia on Thursday at 1:12 p.m. ET.
