Jon Scheyer Takes Blame After Duke's Collapse vs. Houston, 'I Didn't Help Them Enough'

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer took the blame for the team’s 70-67 collapse against Houston in the Final Four on Saturday night.

"I feel for them because they're competitive and they're going to think about plays," Scheyer said after the game. "I didn't help them enough. That's where my mind goes... I couldn't be more proud of them though."

The Duke Blue Devils led by as much as 14 in what looked to be their game to win, but they managed just one field goal in the final 10.5 minutes.

A last-ditch effort from star player Cooper Flagg on a step-back jumper fell short, and a last-second heave from Tyrese Proctor at the buzzer weren’t enough, as two clutch free throws from Houston’s J'Wan Roberts gave the team its first lead since it was 6-5 and paved the way for the win.

Duke, which had not lost since a 77-71 defeat to Clemson on Feb. 8, suffered its first defeat in 15 games in devastating fashion.

"This is part of it. You've got handle the wins, and you've got to handle the losses too," Scheyer continued.

Standout freshman forward Flagg led the team with 27 points in addition to seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocks.

The Houston Cougars, who have never won a championship in school history, will play the Florida Gators on Monday night for the title.
