Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman Are WWE's Best Wrestler-Manager Combo of All Time
Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman have become near-permanent fixtures on WWE programming over the past few years. The Beast Incarnate is enjoying what could be described as perhaps his greatest run, and he's doing so next to the mind who helped mentor him from the beginning.
There is no better combination in WWE right now, and when it comes to wrestlers working with managers, there has never been a better duo in company history.
It's an unlikely alliance—a monstrous brute of a man controlled by an unassuming mouthpiece who cuts promos like a great political orator. Lesnar carves a path of devastation, and Heyman narrates it for the world to witness in what can only be described as high-impact entertainment.
It may be an odd fit, but it's working. It has worked for a long time now.
Heyman saw potential in Lesnar and was the only one to guide him in the beginning. He guided the young star straight to the top. Vince McMahon's company found its next attraction, and Heyman rediscovered his love of managing once again.
While their personalities may differ, those differences make for a perfect combination.
Lesnar is The Hulk to Heyman's Bruce Banner, the monster to his Doctor Frankenstein. He is unbridled rage and total chaos contained in a punishing form, and he wreaks havoc on everything in his path. Lesnar is one of the most dangerous men WWE has ever seen, and he continues to impress with his physicality and raw power.
But despite how good he is, he is not as effective without his advocate.
Heyman is the life of the partnership. The spotlight falls on him often. He is the herald of Lesnar's destruction, and it's up to him to bring the fans in. When Heyman speaks, the crowds listen and respond. They respect him for what he does on the mic as much as they respect Lesnar for what he does in the ring.
Lesnar and Heyman have reached an enviable point in their run together; they are practically bulletproof. All of the work done to get them over as heels is now getting them over as babyfaces. The crowd is along for the ride, and short of joining The Authority, there is nothing either man could do to lose fan support.
While other wrestler-manager teams have succeeded in this area, no one else has done it with such style and ferocity. Paul Bearer and The Undertaker are the best examples and the only ones who compare.
The Deadman and his ghostly talisman brought a supernatural air to WWE that hadn't been seen before and hasn't been seen since. Bearer gave words to Taker when he was not yet cutting promos, and he controlled The Deadman's every move.
While each man already had a career in the business, they found their stardom in WWE together. Undertaker became a legend, and Bearer became his otherworldly voice. They brought many entertaining moments to fans, and their work as a tandem will never be forgotten.
But in terms of impact, in terms of dominating both the ring and the mic, Lesnar and Heyman are in a class of their own. They shine every time they're on the air, and they show no signs of slowing down.
A manager's job is to sell his opponent to the masses, promote his upcoming matches and put him over in every situation. The mouthpiece speaks in hopes of gaining the crowd's attention and approval, whether he's heel or face.
An entertaining manager is worth his weight in gold. He can make or break his client because he is the primary connection to the fans. Heyman does his job better than anyone in that role ever has, and he's done it by the side of the man who could very well go down as the most dominant Superstar in WWE history.
They're automatic from the moment they hit the ramp to the moment Raw goes off the air. It's a natural fit and one that keeps fans coming back for more. Lesnar and Heyman get the job done every time out, and no combo has ever done it better.
Of course, longevity is part of their success in WWE, and that means the two men should continue working together. The company needs them at their best, and they have never been better than when they work as a team. Lesnar and Heyman make it look easy because for them, it is.
