WWE Battleground 2015 Results: Biggest Highlights and Low Points
WWE likes to advertise every show as being an all-out war. With a name like Battleground 2015, did the event live up to the hype, or did it end up more of a minor skirmish?
Now that the dust has settled and the results of the pay-per-view are in, it's time for us to look back on what transpired and sort out the good from the bad.
After Kevin Owens and John Cena tore the house down at Elimination Chamber and Money in the Bank, were they able to make it a hat trick with a third great performance?
Ryback's Intercontinental Championship match had previously been cancelled. Was what filled its place a step up or a downgrade?
Nearly every time Brock Lesnar has shown up since originally returning to WWE several years ago, his matches have been either very entertaining or important to the landscape of the company at the very least.
Did that hold true for this event, or was even the main selling point of the show nothing special?
Let's break down not only the biggest highlights of the night, but also the low points that didn't quite give the fans what they were hoping to see.
Low Point: No Intercontinental Championship Match
1 of 8
Simply put, one of the low points of the night was the absence of one of the matches previously announced.
It's more than understandable why it didn't happen, as Ryback fell victim to a staph infection and would not be able to wrestle, but it's still disappointing to see something built up and then not be able to see the end result.
Hopefully, Ryback's health will improve quickly and this match will be able to take place on Raw or perhaps at SummerSlam soon to make up for it.
Middle of the Road: Battle for the Crown: R-Truth vs. King Barrett
2 of 8
The pre-show's kickoff match between R-Truth and King Barrett was dubbed "The Battle for the Crown" and should have been a particularly important bout, but it simply wasn't.
As far as quality goes, it was decent with nothing offensively bad nor impressively good about it.
For the most part, your point of view will probably depend on what you were expecting to come out of the segment. If you didn't think much would occur, you probably will enjoy it, but you would be disappointed if you had high hopes.
Another factor in your perspective would be who you were rooting for. We may no longer see King What's Up anymore, so if you're an R-Truth fan, this match was likely a downer.
On the other hand, a positive for Barrett fans is that this might be the start of getting him back on track.
Despite being King of the Ring, Barrett has lost all of the momentum that came with winning that tournament. Now that he has won The Battle for the Crown, he may be in line for a resurgence.
Overall, this was just okay, so it doesn't qualify for either a low point or a highlight rating.
Highlight: Randy Orton vs. Sheamus
3 of 8
There wasn't much to build this match up as something important, particularly as Randy Orton spent some of the time heading toward Battleground away from television, but the end result was of a high enough quality to make up for that.
Orton and Sheamus are two guys who have been around long enough that it would make sense for people to not be excited to watch them lock up, as they've seen it before. Despite this, they managed to avoid having the same generic match as they always do.
One of the best aspects about this fight was the false finish, as the match could have easily just ended with Sheamus scoring a pinfall after hitting his Brogue Kick.
Instead, it continued and built toward a random RKO out of nowhere, allowing Orton to pick up the victory.
Some may disagree with the booking decision, as Sheamus is the current Mr. Money in the Bank and should be booked strong before he is able to cash in for his title shot, but losing to someone like Orton doesn't make him look bad.
Wrestling as the opener could have convinced them to phone in their performance, but both of them kept their energy up. That helped start this event off the way it should with a good match between two important stars.
Highlight: The Prime Time Players vs. the New Day
4 of 8
If Orton and Sheamus started things off with a good amount of energy, this tag team match amped it up twice as much.
From start to finish, this was a lot of fun, even though it started out with a promo. The New Day just knows how to milk their mic time for as much as they can and to get the crowd into it.
That didn't stop with the promo, though. Even during the match, The New Day played it up to the crowd, which allowed The Prime Time Players to come off as true babyfaces everyone should cheer for.
One noteworthy, hilarious line was Xavier Woods trying to explain what Big E was doing by saying he's "taking them out with the tricep meat."
Both teams traded off really stiff moves that looked like they hurt quite a bit and by the finish, it seemed like a true payoff for Darren Young and Titus O'Neil to retain the titles.
Highlight: Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt
5 of 8
Keeping up with the trend of improving upon the previous segment, this match had the same amount of energy and all of the hard-hitting action.
Even more than the Orton vs. Sheamus match, these two showcased why they are in the upper echelon of wrestlers in the company as far as importance.
The crowd was split at different points, but they still found themselves cheering different things each man would do.
Their styles meshed well, leading to what felt like an even match where either man could win, which helped boost the unpredictability factor.
It reached a point where something as simple as a clothesline from Bray Wyatt felt as though it could end things, so the crowd popped when Roman Reigns kicked out.
Speaking of the end of the match, another positive was seeing Luke Harper rejoining Wyatt for the twist. Harper's only downgraded since leaving The Wyatt Family, so this could be a step in the right direction.
Reigns and Wyatt will likely wrestle again soon, and if their performance matches or tops this one, everyone should be in store for a treat.
Highlight: Divas Triple Threat Match
6 of 8
The Divas division is regularly viewed as a negative at almost every single show without fail, but things may be changing for the better with the three newest members of the main roster.
Ever since Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks appeared on Monday Night Raw, there's been more buzz surrounding the women in professional wrestling than at any other time this year—and it's positive buzz.
For some reason, WWE never announced a match to take place at Battleground involving any of the nine Divas who are sharing the spotlight, but a match did indeed take place that saw Sasha Banks, Charlotte and Brie Bella face off in a Triple Threat match.
Instead of people leaving for the bathrooms or to get food, the crowd was chanting, "this is awesome," and gasping when the women launched themselves over the ropes.
The ring work was rock solid, showcasing why the two new recruits are so highly praised to an audience that may not be too familiar with them from their NXT days.
This division is on the rise and if the matches between these women continue to improve, there may not be a negative stigma for too much longer.
Highlight: John Cena vs. Kevin Owens
7 of 8
After their previous two matches, it was easy to assume that the third in the series between John Cena and Kevin Owens would be just as good, if not better.
Thankfully, they did not disappoint.
Owens and Cena simply have great chemistry together and know what to do to keep the crowd's eyes glued to the action.
Watching Owens pull off maneuvers that someone his size shouldn't be able to do is incredibly fun, as is seeing him lock Cena in the STF and just put a beating down on WWE's Superman.
Likewise, whenever Cena legitimately appears to be the underdog, it's great to see him fight back and not give up.
Who didn't jump out of their seats when Owens kicked out of the Attitude Adjustment from the top rope?
Sure, you might be disappointed that Owens didn't win, but after that match, it's an acceptable downside as the overall product was amazing.
Highlight: Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar
8 of 8
There's something special when it comes to Brock Lesnar's matches, as they're different from everything else in WWE.
Somehow, this match managed to be a dominant one for Lesnar while also giving Seth Rollins a few opportunities to put up a bit of a fight.
Of course, the biggest talking point of the entire match will end up being the return of The Undertaker, which is yet another thing that is just always great to see no matter what happens.
Leading up to the non-ending was fun and the twist ending will create a lot of buzz heading into SummerSlam for sure.
What do you think were the best and the worst parts of Battleground? Are you happy with the pay-per-view as a whole, or do you think it should have been a lot better?
