College Football Teams Having the Most Success on the 2026 Recruiting Trail

Brad ShepardMar 21, 2025

A glimpse at the top of the 2026 college football recruiting rankings may shock you. Some expected teams are up there, sure, but maybe only two or three of them.

Others are stunners.

Regardless, the '26 class is shaping up to have a wacky start, and while you know some of the usual suspects will creep up the rankings and hit on some big-name prospects, the early jump some of these schools have gotten have to excite college football fans.

NIL can be a great equalizer, and if some of these programs can keep up the early momentum and sign top-tier classes, that will go a long way toward parity in the sport. From a sleeper Big Ten program to one trying to wake up, a shocking Big 12 representative and an ACC program looking to throw hands with Clemson and SMU, teams are off to big starts in the '26 cycle.

Let's take a look at some of the teams kicking butt and taking names in living rooms so far in the battle for next year's recruits.

USC Trojans

1 of 8
USC v Minnesota

Remember when Lincoln Riley bolted Oklahoma for Hollywood, taking quarterback Caleb Williams and a host of recruits with him, and many thought another Trojan dynasty would follow?

It hasn't exactly happened that way.

While it may be a stretch to say Riley is on the hot seat, he definitely needs to show some growth in Year 2 in the Big Ten. One thing that will build goodwill: USC is a hot name again on the recruiting trail, and that's not been consistently the case in recent years.

In the '26 class, nobody is doing better right now. The Trojans have 15 total commits, including 5-star elite athlete Xavier Griffin and nine 4-star prospects. Everybody is still recruiting Griffin, including home-state Georgia, and he's expected to be the top linebacker in the nation.

While Riley is known for producing elite offenses, the Trojans know they've got to improve on the other side of the ball in the rugged Big Ten, and they're adapting.

This class—if it stays together—will go a long way in addressing those needs. Kids want to play for coordinator D'Anton Lynn, and it shows in the pledges. Five top-100 defensive recruits outfit the class.

The California cornerback combo of RJ Sermons and Brandon Lockhart are the best duo at the position in the nation, and defensive linemen Simote Katoanga and Jaimeon Winfield are huge wins on the trail. So is edge Braeden Jones.

The offensive playmakers make an appearance, too, with the likes of receiver Trent Mosley and running back Shahn Alston. This class is off to a deep-and-loaded start.

Clemson Tigers

After a bit of a dip in recent years, it certainly feels like the Clemson Tigers are on their way back. They should be right on the brink of the national championship race this year with an elite offense, and that momentum could put them back where they expect to be.

Coach Dabo Swinney made a shrewd offensive coordinator hire in Garrett Riley a couple of years ago, and he did it again this offseason by convincing Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Allen to coach the Tigers.

Players are paying attention, and though Swinney's recruiting style isn't for everybody, it resonates with certain kids who value the word "commitment" and regularly stay true.

The Tigers currently have one of the top two classes in the country, consisting of 12 commitments, eight of which are 4-star prospects. While none are top-100 players, it's still a quality class.

Wide receiver Naeem Burroughs and Interior offensive lineman Chancellor Barclay are the top-rated pledges in Clemson's class, and pass-catcher Connor Salmin isn't that far behind them.

Grant Wise and Adam Guthrie are future O-line stalwarts alongside Barclay, giving the Tigers a terrific start to the trenches, with 3-star Braden Wilmes. The defensive back duo of Shavar Young Jr. and safety Kaden Gebhardt could get on the field quickly.

Getting a couple of quarterback prospects in the fold already with 4-star Tait Reynolds and 3-star Brock Bradley is a big deal, too. This is a class that, with a couple of major pledges, could hang around in the top 10.

Oregon Ducks

When the Oregon Ducks replaced Mario Cristobal, who left for his alma mater of Miami, they were going for a young, energetic fireball of a head coach who would resonate with young kids.

They couldn't have made a better hire than Dan Lanning, who has kept the Ducks flying on an upward trajectory.

The way he's recruiting and hitting it big in the transfer portal, it feels like it's just a matter of "when" and not "if" Lanning wins a national title in Eugene.

The '26 class is not one huge on numbers (9 commits) yet, but it's big on talent with two 5-stars and four 4-stars out of the nine pledges.

While offensive tackle Kodi Greene is a mammoth force who could anchor the Ducks' front for years to come, the most intriguing prospect is 5-star North Carolina tight end Kendre Harrison, a two-sport phenom who is 6'7", 243 pounds. Both of those guys are exciting.

After them, there are still big-time playmakers like running back Tradarian Bell, who is the nation's fourth-rated runner who is coming from the Lone Star State to Eugene. The defensive trio of defensive linemen Tony Cumberland and Tomuhini Topui and linebacker Tristan Phillips are all top-200 players, too.

Everybody is going to gawk at the potential of Greene and Harrison, and rightfully so, but this is the first stage of a class that ultimately could be the best in the nation. It's being a little bit upstaged by USC right now, but Lanning plays the long game as well as anybody.

Expect the Ducks' class to be at or near the top.

Kansas Jayhawks

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 30 Kansas at Baylor

Yes, we're in March Madness. No, this isn't a basketball recruiting section.

But, believe it or not, the Kansas Jayhawks have one of the nation's top recruiting classes in football so far in the 2026 cycle. Yes, you read that right. A program that was the laughingstock of the FBS for years is now in the mix for a strong class.

Leipold's record through four seasons in Lawrence is 22-28, and if you're not overwhelmed by that, you don't know where the Jayhawks came from. They actually had a nine-win season in '23, and even though last year was a bit of a disappointment, they had several close losses.

Prospects are seeing just how close they are to breaking through in the Big 12. Granted, KU's class is currently ranked fourth because of volume (13 commits) over value, but this class is pretty strong.

JJ Dunnigan is a 4-star athlete they pulled from rival Kansas State's location of Manhattan. Kaden Snyder is the other 4-star, an offensive tackle out of Salina, Kansas. It's an oddly strong year for recruiting in the Sunflower State, and the Jayhawks have seven instate commits.

That's seven of the top 11 players in that state, and they are a strong candidate to land the top player, 4-star tight end Ian Premer.

All of Leipold's commits are in the top 1,000 players in the nation, and while this class on its own may need some star power to remain in the top 20, this is a program that has just one top-50 class in the past six years.

So, while it has a long way to go, this start for Leipold is sort of uncharted waters.

LSU Tigers

5 of 8
Baylor v LSU - Kinder's Texas Bowl

Suddenly, the LSU Tigers are surging back into the top of the recruiting rankings for the 2026 cycle. But can they stay there and keep the elite early pledges?

If you remember, last year at this time, Bryce Underwood (Michigan) and Dakorien Moore (Oregon) were going to be Bayou Bengals, but they bolted. LSU did just fine in the class, but they were swings-and-misses.

Just this week, Brian Kelly jolted the recruiting world when he seemingly got an out-of-the-blue pledge from 5-star receiver Tristen Keys, who many thought was favoring Tennessee or Ole Miss. Instead, Keys decided to play for a school that has churned out terrific pass-catchers left and right in recent years.

Along with 4-stars Kenny Darby and Jakai Anderson, good luck to anybody else signing a better class of receivers if all three stick. Those dudes have top-shelf potential, and Keys is the best receiver in the nation for '26.

Throw in elite defensive lineman Richard Anderson and top-tier safety Aiden Hall, and that's a healthy top group of a core nucleus for a class. If the Tigers keep adding to it, this is the type of start to a class that could wind up at the top.

Of course, at this time last year, LSU was the runaway No. 1-ranked class, and it didn't hold, and in the NIL world, anything can change. But they can pay with the best of them in Baton Rouge, and LSU is a blue-blood program.

This feels like it's going to be a big class for Kelly.

Tennessee Volunteers

6 of 8
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 21 CFP First-Round - Tennessee at Ohio State

Coach Josh Heupel is straight-up stacking elite quarterback prospects, and there may not wind up a better one on Rocky Top than 5-star 2026 pledge Faizon Brandon.

Virtually every other program in the country is after the North Carolina prospect, but so far, he seems locked-in to head to Knoxville and play in Neyland Stadium. That's huge news for a Vols team that is trying to surround their class catalyst with big-time players.

While the Vols are right on the tip of the tongues of uncommitted recruits like receiver Tristan Keys and running back Savion Hiter, they're already got some marquee prospects in the fold in what is already a top-five class with just eight commits.

Instate receiver Tyreek King and tight end Carson Sneed are good-looking players Tennessee desperately want to keep at home, and they're off to a good start despite other programs coming after them. Sneed, for instance, visited Colorado recently.

Chattanooga offensive lineman Gabriel Osenda is another Volunteer State recruiting win instate that could be an anchor on the front in the future alongside youngsters already on the roster like David Sanders Jr. and William Satterwhite.

Fast-rising defensive lineman Tyson Bacon out of Hoover, Alabama, was a nice, early find for D-line coach Rodney Garner and defensive assistant Lavorn "Chop" Harbin, but other schools are trying to get him to flip, which is the nature of the recruiting game.

Lots of big fish are considering heading to Rocky Top, too, and this is a very strong start for Heupel and Co. as they look to build off last year's playoff run.

Illinois Fighting Illini

7 of 8
Illinois v Northwestern

As with Kansas, it doesn't matter what time of year it is: You simply don't expect to see the Illinois Fighting Illini near the top of the recruiting rankings.

Yet, here they are in March.

The thing with coach Bret Bielema's team is it may just have the shot to build a bunch of momentum with so much returning in 2025.

How far would their recruiting surge then? Right now, it's a top-seven class, but there are only a pair of 4-star players. Without question, it's still the best start for the program in recruiting in a long time.

Victor Singleton is an elite 4-star cornerback prospect who is the No. 81-ranked overall player in the country who likely could play for the majority of teams around the country, but right now, he's set on Champaign. Add 4-star athlete Cam Thomas, who is expected to play linebacker for the Illini, and that's two dynamite defenders in the early fold.

They highlight a class of 10 pledges that is currently ranked seventh nationally.

Offensive linemen Casey Thomman and Landen Von Seggern are lined up to block for quarterback Michael Clayton, a 3-star Florida product who listed offers from Auburn, Arkansas, Louisville, Ole Miss and SMU.

Clayton has been in the fold for a while, giving Bielema his first commit of the '26 class. Things have just snowballed downhill from there, so if the Illini have the type of year they expect, they could wind up with one of the biggest surprise classes of the cycle.

Penn State Nittany Lions

8 of 8
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 09 CFP Semifinal Capital One Orange Bowl - Notre Dame vs Penn State

It's no surprise that the Penn State Nittany Lions are right there in the top 10 for the early 2026 recruiting rankings. It's been coach James Franklin's M.O. to identify recruits early and get them in the fold.

The best thing for PSU fans, too, is Franklin normally keeps the majority of his pledges in the fold and they sign to play in Happy Valley. He loves loyalty, and the recruits normally are in it for the long haul.

It's not uncommon for the Lions to have the bulk of their class in the fold before the season starts, and they're just going after big fish the rest of the way. So far, a class of eight pledges looks like a good start.

The best of the bunch right now is elite Pennsylvania native and offensive tackle Kevin Brown, who will be paving the way for Harrisburg High School star running back Messiah Mickens at Penn State just like he is in his prep days.

That is an exciting duo around which to build for the future, but they aren't the only foundational blocks. Mission Hills (California) 4-star quarterback Troy Huhn is set to come across the country to try and replace Drew Allar under center. He'll have Delaware receiver Jahsiear Rogers to throw to.

Then, on the defensive side of the ball, 4-star edge-rusher Daniel Jennings and 4-star safety Matt Sieg give the Lions six high-level pledges out of the bunch.

With a roster flip next season, Franklin may engineer a youth movement after a year Penn State expects to at least finish in the playoffs and maybe with a title. This is a great nucleus to start a class that could get the opportunity to play quickly.
