It was almost too close to call!
Toyota’s Christopher Bell emerged victorious in a photo finish at the Shriners Children's 500 at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday in Avondale, Arizona. He defeated teammate Denny Hamlin by just 0.449 seconds in a tight finish, with Kyle Larson taking third place.
With Bell's victory, he made history as the first Cup driver to win three consecutive races in the Next Gen era, previously securing wins at the Ambetter Health 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway and the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas.
Here is a look at the race's standings:
1. Christopher Bell
2. Denny Hamlin
3. Kyle Larson
4. Josh Berry
5. Chris Buescher
6. William Byron
7. Alex Bowman
8. Kyle Busch
9. Zane Smith
10. Chase Elliott
Notably, Katherine Legge became the first woman to start a Cup race in over seven years, finishing 30th in her Cup debut with Live Fast Motorsports.
Fans reacted to Bell’s record-making win as he rose to No. 2 in the standings and continues to be the driver to beat.
William Byron entered Monday’s race in first place after winning Stage 1, where he remains with 165 points despite finishing sixth in Stage 2. Bell jumped two spots to No. 2 with 152 points, while Tyler Reddick remained steady in third with 143 points. Second-place finisher Hamlin climbed 10 positions to No. 7 with 110 points.
On Sunday, Bell clocked his fastest lap time on lap 278 with a blistering pass around the track at 27.492 seconds. After starting slow, Bell took the lead from Hamlin between turns one and two on lap 277.
Things remained tight as Bell and Hamlin traded leads, with Bell fending off late overtaking attempts from both Hamlin and Larson, who were driving nose-to-tail in the closing laps for first place.
Bell led on the inside line, while Hamlin took the outside. No. 20, Bell officially took the lead in turn one of the final lap, but Hamlin fought back in turn two, forcing Bell to charge through the final turn and secure the victory.
Drivers will be back in action on March 16 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube race.
