In terms of the punching stats, Davis and Roach were pretty equal. They landed 103 and 112 total blows respectively, with Davis boasting a slightly higher success rate. He also connected on six more power punches (93) than Roach (87).
Two of the judges scored the fight 114-114 and a third had it 115-113 for Davis.
However, the outcome was the source of controversy because Roach wasn't credited with a knockdown in the ninth round. Midway through the round, Davis took a knee and went over to his corner to have a trainer wipe a towel around his eye.
Referee Steve Willis allowed the fight to continue. If he had scored a knockdown, then it would've swung the round to Roach and altered the result of the bout.
Explaining what had happened in that moment, Davis said some hair grease had gotten into his eyes and was impacting his vision. Roach, for his part, thought the rules were clear.
"It should have been a knockdown," he said. "If that was knockdown, I win the fight. He's saying grease got in his eye, but if he takes a knee and the ref starts counting, it should be a knockdown."
With a few days to let things settle, Davis is clearly still frustrated with the controversy. A rematch would certainly allow him to set the record straight.
