Gervonta Davis Talks Controversial Draw vs. Roach Jr.: 'Hopefully We Can Run It Back'
After retaining his title in controversial fashion following a majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. on Saturday night, WBA lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis is open to a rematch.
"Lamont is a great fighter," Davis said after the fight, per ESPN's Andreas Hale. "He got the skills, like I said before, he got punching power. It was a lesson. Hopefully, we can run it back."
The end result of Davis' title defense left fans disappointed, especially after a questionable moment in the ninth round where he took a knee after getting hit with a jab. However, referee Steve Willis chose not to score a knockdown for Roach, potentially robbing him of a 10-8 round. Two judges scored the fight 114-114, and the third scored it 115-113 for Davis.
The 30-year-old blamed the strange moment on grease getting in his eyes from his hair.
"I just got my hair done two days ago and she put grease in my hair," Davis said. "When I was sweating and things like that, it burned my eyes."
Naturally, Roach was disappointed and made it clear that he believes it should have been scored as a knockdown.
"If you take a knee and the ref starts counting, it should be a knockdown," he said. "If that's a knockdown, I win the fight. I'm not banking on that knockdown to win. I just thought I pulled it out."
The 29-year-old also expressed interest in a rematch against Davis following Saturday's close contest.
"I'm just a little disappointed in the decision," Roach said. "I thought I pulled it out, but that's what two skilled fighters do. I definitely thought I won but we could run it back. … Even though I didn't win tonight, I thought I did but it's a win for me in my book. We are not satisfied with that. We need a real 'W.'"
